Something was hot at Spice Market...and it definitely wasn't me - but we'll get to that later.
Guess who I got to meet when I visited New York? My best-blogging buddy, Sue, of Food Network Musings! We met at Spice Market, Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's restaurant.
The menu at Spice Market contains authentically uplifted versions of flavorful street foods that Jean-Georges Vongerichten enjoyed while he visited China, India, Vietnam and Thailand. The food is served family style, in a casual, but sexy environment.
My mom and I had just toured the French Culinary Institute, and were running a little late, but luckily Sue wasn't mad at us. FCI was a very nice school, by the way. I would LOVE to go to school there. They're sending information to me and then I'll figure out what I want to do. It's hard to say right now.
Well, let me tell you, Sue was so warm and inviting, I felt like I had known her for years. Also, she was just as hilarious as she is on her blog. I'm glad I got to meet her; I'm a fan of her blog, and I always learn something new. Anyway, we had TONS to catch up on, so I didn't pay as much attention to the food as I should have.
First we had these chip-things with a sweet and spicy sauce. They're called papadums - a thin, Indian wafer, made from a dough containing lentil, chickpea, black gram or rice flour, and seasoned with chili, cumin, garlic or black pepper.
Man, were these good. I wanted to eat the whole basket, but I thought that would be rude. I'm going to try making these.

We ordered the Bentō box lunch, which contained several courses and a drink.

I ordered Fiji iced tea. Kind of tasted like watered down iced tea - definitely missed the Fiji part. The other drink is a cherry-yuzu soda - a little sweet for me, actually.

Pea soup isn't that exciting, and I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I actually LOVED this soup. I thought about if for days after I tasted it. It was a lovely green shade, flavored with coconut milk, and very smooth and creamy. There were peas and thinly sliced radish in the soup, that added some texture, and I think maybe there was an herb in there also.

This little salad was brilliant. I'm having trouble remembering the exact ingredients, but I think it contained mango, sliced tomato, green beans?, cashews, cilantro, and my favorite ingredient, the crystallized tamarind. My first time trying tamarind!

This chicken satay was so good...so good. I could have eaten a couple more of these sticks.

By this time, I was getting a little full, because I was also helping my mom eat her food. I ate some of the striped bass, but not a lot.
It contained shiso, miso, bonito, tamari, yuzu, daikon, udon.
Nahh, just kidding. I have no idea what was in it.

Time for dessert! My favorite part! Ginger ice cream, which was very good. It came in a take-out box. Cute, but impractical.

And a chocolate-Ovaltine kulfi, with caramel sauce, banana, whipped cream and caramel corn. Kulfi is kind of like a thick ice cream made with sweetened condensed milk.
I liked this dessert because it was whimsical and a lot of fun, but honestly, it was kind of a mess. The kulfi was okay, but not great; the sprinkles were too crunchy, I think. It tasted like milk chocolate, but not necessarily like malt. I see where they were going with this dessert, but they didn't execute it well. Wow, I sound like I could be a judge on Top Chef. Kidding.
However, I LOVE the idea of using popcorn in a dessert...coooool.

Now, for the HOT STUFF at Spice Market.
Food Network celebrity (and hottie), Chef Danny Boome, was sitting a few tables away from us! He was eating lunch with Bob Tuschman, Food Network Senior Vice President of Programming and Production! (Next Food Network Star Judge.)
I felt like I was going to freak out the whole time I was sitting there. This was a dream come true! A Food Network celebrity sighting! I thought about rushing up to Danny and giving him a big smooch, but decided against it. Or asking him if he wanted a massage.
The two got up and started to leave, and I rushed up to them like a huge idiot. Bob was kind of already out the door, but I asked Danny if he would take a picture with me. He was SO NICE! He could have been rude to me, but he wasn't. We even had a conversation. I can't remember what it was...but I bet it was great.
Then Bob walked over and I got to meet him too!
Look at how Danny's touching my arm! Swoon. I look terrible, though. I had been walking all over New York City that day.

I only have one more New York post to go...

Ahahahahahah! This was too funny! I can just imagine the scene! And he's totally grabing your arm, you lucky girl! Have you washed it allready?
ReplyDeleteI wanna eat those popcorn from the dessert! Do you think they would serve me only a bowl of those?
Wow! I'll bet Danny was in awe of your beautiful, unique heart-shaped eyes!
ReplyDeleteIs it possible you are getting more and more fun to read? It must be, because you are. And that restaurant sounds fabulous.
Thanks for the picture/description of papadums, because I hear a lot about them on the BBC channels over here, but I never really understood what they were. I was thinking they were more like some kind of pita bread or something. Thanks for the info.
Ha, ha, ha... you are too funny with your stories, Emiline!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had the guts to have a picture taken with the chef I'm getting cooking classes too.... maybe one of these days.
As we say here... it would be cheaper to buy you a dress than invite you for lunch ;D
You guys make a cute couple. Lunch sounded amazing--is the place relatively new? I've never heard of it. That's cool you met up with another blogger. Good job on the pics.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great lunch you had and so much fun! I love the picture with hearts for your eyes!!! Too funny....
ReplyDeletemy jealousy knows no bounds. he is, without a doubt, the eye candy of the food network. :)
ReplyDeleteDanny must be on the American Food Network because I have missed him altogether....I wouldn't forget that cutie, with those muscles, and that accent....slap...back to reality...I could be his mother!!!!!But I do have a gaughter unless he is now yours...wink... The restaurant looked amazing by the way.
ReplyDeleteDid you notice that everything tastes better in NY? Hehehe, and who wouldn't have thoughts like that with such a hunk :-p
ReplyDeleteLucky you! Danny is hot. Now I will have to start watching his show. Great restaurant!
ReplyDeleteEmiline you never fail to make me giggle on your wonderful posts.
ReplyDeleteWOW the restaurant sounds fabulous and how lovely to meet up with a fellow blogger!!

I love it when food has you thinking about it days after you eat it. This looks like a great place... mostly because you got to try such a variety of things.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about that FN blogger, so will have to check it out. I also would never have recognized the dude you mentioned. He is a hottie. Can't believe you actually approached him!!

ReplyDeletewhat a nice meal......And a 'spotting' to boot.....

ReplyDeleteI am jealous, you are lucky to meet Danny. He is pretty isn't he.
ReplyDeleteokay, I am officially starving now.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Spice Market before. And, I've NEVER had a Food Network Star sighting. I can't wait 'til I do. Joe and I went to Babbo last week and I was really hoping to see Mario Batali, but no such luck.
ReplyDeleteOf course, maybe we saw him on the way out, but I was a little too drunk to remember...damn wine pairing with dinner... ;)
Ha ha, that is too funny! And yet SO COOL that you met Danny Boome!! He could come teach me to cook anyday.
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny!! I would have been dying, as well - even though I'm married!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great dinner! I definitely have to try the Spice Market when I go! And your photo with Danny is what too funny...I loved it!
ReplyDeleteOMG I can't believe you met them! New York is definitely the place to be if you wanna meet Food Network People. That one dessert with the popcorn and chocolate looked crazy good. It reminded me of the game "Candy Land" because it was just so pretty and magical.
ReplyDeleteWow, lucky you Emiline. In the arms of a celebrity. You remind me of some cartoons when they fall in love and hearts come out of their eyes :-P
ReplyDeleteI am still awed by your gutsiness. I can't believe you did that. (Although I must admit if I saw Bob Tuschman, I'd be tempted to kick him in the nether regions and tell him to stop crapping up his network with bad cooks.)
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously envious of you and Sue having lunch together. This blogworld needs some kind of big NY get together.
I finally checked out the Spice Market website. What a great place. By NY standards it's downright reasonable too.
LOL! What a great story, Em! I am cracking up over here - especially of that photo with the hearts on your eyes! LOL! I am so glad you got to meet Sue! I would love to meet her too and you of course) and like EVERYONE! We so need an international food bloggers conference soon!

ReplyDeleteyou are too cute. are you going to wash your arm ever again?
ReplyDeletetoo bad that kulfi dessert was a little weird... i heart kulfi in its simplicity.

ReplyDeletelucky you!! so exciting :) i love bob tuschman! i always like him on Next FN Star. I love your little heart shaped googley eyes :) you should have jumped him :) i also like the idea of popcorn in the dessert. i was eating dinner at this restaurant in va once, and i got rabbit with... get this... corn pops! it was SO GOOD! i've been wanting to incorporate corn pops into a savory dinner ever since. it kinda matches super well :)

How fun. I do love this restaurant. In fact let me go bug CS to take me to NYC so we can eat there.Im praying the French Culinary Institute works out.
ReplyDeleteMy roommate is in love with Danny Boome, too. It's all I hear about when FN is on tv. Even when I'm trying to flip away from Sandra Lee...she's talkin' 'bout Danny.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a good time at the Spice Market :) Whenever you go to an Indian restaurant, they give you papadams and a chutney to go with them. It's like...the free bread you get to fill up on even though you just ordered a $35 steak, salad, and soup.
omgg. i love the fiji iced tea color.
ReplyDeleteHehehe.. Looks like you got a big crush on Danny! Come back! I heard he's waiting for you. :-)
ReplyDeleteSpice Market is a cool place to hang out at night, i like it.

ReplyDeleteYou're so brave...I never have the guts to go up to celebrities and ask for their pictures. I have a fear of rejection.
Love love love Indian food. Papads are great - perfect with a little mint chutney. Mmmm...
ReplyDeleteFunny post!
