Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

There are many perfect food marriages that exist.

Chocolate chip cookies and milk.

Apple pie and vanilla ice cream.

Hot cocoa and marshmallows.

Pancakes and maple syrup.

The list goes on and on. Is it just me or does peanut butter go with everything?
It really, really does. I'm starting to wonder if people are as addicted to it as I am. It always sounds good.

Peanut butter and jelly sammiches.

Peanut butter crackers.

Peanut butter and honey.

One of my favorite peanut butter marriages is peanut butter, banana and chocolate. Try it if you haven't already.

I first had this combination, a few years ago, in a frozen coffee drink: espresso blended with chocolate, peanut butter, banana, milk and ice. Best. Drink. Ever. After class I'd stop at the coffee house every day to have one. It's a good drink to sip on while you pretend to read a book but are secretly people-watching. Such as the homeless woman that used to sit on the couch and sleep while holding a tiny bag of Doritos she bought. Or the hunched-over old man who spent ten minutes hogging the cream and sugar for his coffee, getting it just to his liking,

Try this peanut butter-chocolate chip banana bread recipe and I guarantee you'll never use your old banana bread recipe again. This bread isn't dense and soggy like most banana bread recipes, and it's more flavorful with the addition of peanut butter and chocolate chips, and a sprinkling of raw sugar on top.

Look at those big chocolate chips! Those are Ghiradelli bittersweet chocolate chips. How can I go back to normal-sized chocolate chips again?

Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Banana Bread (Recipe by Me)
Printable Recipe

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 medium ripe mashed bananas
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, divided use
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
1 1/2 teaspoons turbinado sugar, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9-inch loaf pan with cooking spray or butter.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, using a mixer on medium speed, beat together banana, peanut butter, 2 tablespoons butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until creamy, about 2 minutes; beat in eggs and vanilla extract until combined. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in milk and flour mixture until just combined; stir in chocolate chips

Pour batter into prepared pan; bake for 50 minutes. Remove pan from oven, melt additional tablespoon butter, brush evenly over the top, and top with turbinado sugar. Continue to bake an additional 5 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool for 20 minutes before running a knife around outside edges, removing, and transferring to a wire rack to cool an additional 30 minutes before slicing.

Makes 6 servings

I absolutely LOVE banana bread but have never used peanut butter in it. I will take your word on this Emily and will try it. I have all the ingredients on hand (three nice rotten bananas!). I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks!

I must agree that bananas and chocolate, bananas and peanut butter, peanut butter and chocolate, are some of hte best combos around. Mixing bananas, pb and chocolate is the most heavenly mixture of all.

I want a piece of this right now with my tea!

This sounds great. I bough an obscene amount of bananas this week and a lot of them are already at the "banana bread" state of ripening, so I'm going to use some up with your recipe. I'll tell you how it works out :)

YUM! That looks really good!

I agree with you, peanut butter pairs well with a lot of things! But my favorite is the peanut butter-chocolate combination-- simply heaven! This recipe sounds so yummy! Thanks for sharing, I can’t wait to try it. Let me also share one of my favorite peanut recipes since you are a big fan like me! Check out the Chocolate Mousse Swirled Cookie Pie at www.dovechocolatediscoveries.com (yes, it a pie but you will love the peanut taste in it).

You and I would be such good friends. I too have an obsession with peanut butter...in fact, I've got five jars of it in my pantry, no joke...five! This looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, I'm printing the recipe out right now. :)

Sounds like a really great recipe! I love chocolate chips in banana bread.

I was very relieved that that wasn't sea salt on top.

Is the peanut butter taking the place of some of the butter? It's so little butter that you could almost consider this a spa recipe.

I LOVE toasted banana bread.

oh Em - that looks like such an incredible combination of flavors!

When we were much younger we used to eat peanut butter off a spoon like ice cream, so I have to admit I don't LOVE peanut butter, I have it from time to time if there's nothing else, but something drew me to this recipe, and when I have these gut feelings I'm usually right, I think I'm gonna give this a try.

Yummy! I used to mash peanut butter and banana together as an after school snack. My current fav it to mix a big spoonful into a 100 calorie bag of just popped popcorn. I know that kinda defeats the purpose, but come on, it's PEANUT BUTTER!

I did one of these once. Good stuff that PB & chocolate chip + banana bread.

damn that looks amazing! peanut butter and banana sandwiches are just so amazing every time, you can't go wrong! I also like to make smoothies with PB, Banana, milk, and vanilla (and sometimes a dash of cinnamon). Adding chocolate to that would be awesome.

And I have to agree--peanut butter goes with everything! We have a PB&J Foie Gras at work even--heavenly.

Yummo! I am interested in trying this, because one thing I don't like about many banana bread recipes is that the banana taste is overwhelming - whereas if it was balanced out by other flavours like peanut butter and chocolate, there may be perfect harmony.

Hi Emily-
I've had this recipe bookmarked for a few weeks now, and I finally got around to making it tonight. I just finished my first slice and it's lovely! It tasted as awesome as I thought it would after seeing your photos. I used 4 bananas instead of two, and white whole wheat flour instead of ap. I recommend it! I was surprised how gentle the pb flavor was...which means my next piece will get a nice slather of it on top. Thanks for the great post!

Emily said...

Glad you all are enjoying this recipe!

Leah said...

i made it this weekend...doubled the recipe...turned out beautifully. i used laura scudder's natural peanut butter, which made it even more delicious. i think next time i will add ONE more banana bc i think the peanut butter overwhelmed the banana flavor just a tad. thanks again - delish!

I'm really excited to try this (man, and I thought I was the only person who liked this combo! I used to get it made as a milkshake at a local milkshake shop) but I've only got one banana. I may add in some applesauce or something for extra moisture, and if so, I'll report back on how it is. I usually make my banana bread plain with a healthy dose of cinnamon in it but it may be time for a variation!

I just made this for a work function - SO GOOD! Everyone just ate it up!

This was a great recipe! I made it tonight and placed a pic on my blog saying how good this was! My husband absolutely loved it! Thanks!

Just tried this recipe yesterday, and boy is it yummy. I will note that while the center of the loaf came out deliciously moist, the slices from the end bits are a little on the side of dry.

Maybe one of those silicon baking dishes would have been the solution? I used a conventional nonstick metal loaf pan for mine.

I think next time I may 'up' the PB content and see if that changes anything, because I will definitely be sticking with this recipe in the future. THANKS!

I wanted to bring this into my Physical Therapy place as a treat to all my favorite PT's there. I was wondering if there is a way to turn this into muffins or a bar type of dessert so that it would be easier for everyone to have one?!

thanks!
