Sugar Plum Turns Two

Happy Birthday Sugar Plum!

Two years ago I bought my laptop and decided to start a little food blog called Sugar Plum.

What made me start a food blog? What makes anyone start a food blog? I had been reading several food blogs at that time, and the writers inspired me to start my own. I hope I've inspired others to do the same.

Two years ago I was baking frequently for friends and family, for holidays and events, and cooking contests. I had all of these recipe ideas swirling around in my head, and I needed to write them down somewhere. Not only did I have recipes churning in my head, but thoughts on life.

So I started Sugar Plum. Why the name Sugar Plum? I really can't remember. I think I thought it sounded cute at the time, and I wanted "sugar" in the title since it was a baking blog. And it makes me think of Christmas and sugar plums and the dance of the sugar plum fairies and so on.... Isn't the music fitting?

Starting this website was one of the smartest things I've ever done in my life.

Through this blog I've met and spoken with so many wonderful people, and made many friends. I want to thank you all for reading. Seriously. Thank you for taking the time to stop by. It means more to me than you'll ever know.

I love blogging. I love writing, I love testing and writing recipes, I love taking pictures, I love posting about something I'm really excited about. I love reading other food blogs. This blog makes me so happy and gives me something to look forward to every day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being so awesome! I love my readers and I'd do anything for you. I want to work on this blog and make it the best I can for you. If anyone ever needs anything... help, advice, etc, please don't hesitate to email me.

I wish I could repay you all somehow. Does a giveaway help?
Couldn't hurt. I love giveaways! I wish I could have them more often.

Stephanie of Portland Truffle emailed me a few weeks ago and asked me if I wanted to sample one of their advent calendars.

First, you know what advent calendars are, right? We had to sell them in French class as a fundraiser every year. The ones we sold weren't of good quality and each chocolate was the same and didn't taste good at all.

Not this calendar!

I got to know Stephanie from emailing her, and she is SO nice and fun! She lives in Portland, Oregon. I am jealous. I was very impressed when I checked out the Portland Truffle's website. They make everything fresh to order, whether it's truffles, chocolates, or other confections.

So anyway, sweet Stephanie sent me a beautiful calendar to sample and blog about. I had fun opening the little doors and seeing what was inside. Each door holds something different! That's why I love this calendar so much. Well, also because of how delicious everything was. I mean, really, really good stuff.

Oh my gawd! Candies!

This is a homemade chocolate dipped marshmallow found inside of the calendar.
Best marshmallow I've ever had.

Fluffer nutter! My favorite. Drool.

Cacao nib toffee. I didn't think toffee could get any better, but it does. By adding cacao nibs.

So guess what? Stephanie & Portland Truffle were generous enough to donate three advent calendars for a Sugar Plum Blogiversary Spectacular! Three lucky readers will receive a personalized advent calendar for the holiday season. Three - now those are good odds!

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite treat to make or eat around the holidays is (this will give me some ideas of what to make), and you'll be entered to win. Anyone can enter; you don't have to have a blog - just be sure to leave your name and a way to contact you. Also, you can only comment once. The giveaway starts today and ends on Friday, October 16th at 12:00 AM (CST). That's not a lot of time, so comment!

I'll pick the winners using a random number generator and post results on Friday's blog. Good luck!

I've always thought Advent calendars were such fun- never have seen an adult one though. I always did them for kids. I even have a screensaver advent calendar- a snow scene with a bare pine tree and every day of December a new animal or outdoor tree decoration appears. Every Christmas I make Martha Stewart's Spiced Nuts from her Entertaining cookbook. My family loves them.

I cannot believe I might be first! Happy Blogiversary! I really enjoy reading your blog. My favorite treats to make for the holidays are something called reindeer munch -- a messy concoction of golden grahams, M&Ms, pretzels & almond bark, delicious! I also love to make fancy frosted sugar cookies!

Butterballs, from the Silver Palate cookbook. They are the main reason I can stand the cold around Christmas!

HAPPY 2nd BLOGIVERSARY!

Think of ALL you've accomplished in that time. You're amazing!

My favorite holiday treat is probably a dacquoise. It has everything - crunch, smooth creaminess, chocolate, if you want...so goood.

Oh, you said to let you if we needed anything...How's about a batch of Sugar Plum brownies? THAT would be a great way of celebrating your blogiversary. I would remember it forever.

Happy birthday Sugar Plum!

The advent calender is so cute! I always get one every year, it's a great tradition.

I can't wait for the holidays so I can make my favorite Christmas cookie treat! It doesn't really have a name that I know of, but basically you take two Nilla wafers, and sandwich them together with peanut in the middle, and then dip them in chocolate. And of course you have to add sprinkles after that. Delicious!

spill said...

Even though there are no chocolate and peanut butter in them, every Christmastime, I make pizzelles with anise. They are thin and crisp and take all afternoon to make a nice mountain, but oh so festive. arspan@gmail.com

happy two year birthday - I guess in blogland there is no such thing as the terrible twos - I like to make spritz cookies -

Two favorite things to bake and gift and eat during the holidays...
1. Candied Ginger Shortbread
2. Old Fashioned Ginger Snaps
Much more different in taste, texture, etc than you might expect given the names.
BTW both are lovely with a mug of tea, a glass of wine, or my favorite - a small glass of scotch on the rocks.

If I had to name two other "sweets" that make me think of holidays, red velvet cake or 7 day coconut cake. My godmother (raised in North Carolina) was likely to make these.

Congrats on the anniversary! I love your blog and all the yummy things you make. Around the holidays, I love all sorts of pies...sweet potato pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie. Can't wait for the holiday season!

My husband even liked them and he doesn't normally like walnuts. Anyways, I love giveaways (they make me giddy) and decided there is always time for a first. Keep blogging, because I love reading it. I think I have to say my favorite treat to eat/make around the holidays is the old fashioned chocolate chip cookie. Best holiday memory ever. :)

Happy 2 years! I've been following you since I caught an episode on Food Network (The name of the show escapes me...).

I can't decide on just one holiday treat.. So many of them to choose from. But on the top of my list:
Ginger snap cookies (Or all things ginger)
Roasted chestnuts
and Ho Dduk, a Korean tasty treat that you can find during winters on the streets of Seoul.(http://annamatic.blogspot.com/2006/11/ho-dduk.html for photos and a brief description)

I like my Ho Dduk (When homemade) filled with roasted sesame seeds, nuts, and brown sugar. Or sometimes just plain with adzuki bean. :)

I love rum cake! It's baked in a bundt pan and is a dense, moist yellow cake with a nut topping on the top. After the cake is baked, cooled, and inverted, you pour this delicious rum glaze all over it and the cake gets all moist and sticky. Drooool.
I love your blog and congratulations on the anniversary!

my favorite thing to make during the holidays would have to be my grandmother's "butter crisp cookies." they're delicious, thin cookies that remind me of growing up with her. it's also really fun to share the 'secret' (and undoubtedly very southern) ingredient with people- mashed potato flakes.

sounds gross- tastes fab. :)

It is such a pleasure to read you and discover your recipes... I just love it!

As for the "calendrier de l'Avant" (which I looked forward to every year in France), I would say that I like to bake Gingerbread cookies and also, "Sablés de l'Avant", yes, Advent Shortbreads, if I had to translate. That's a recipe I have from an old version of the Larousse Gastronomique, and in short, it's a lemon infused shortbread, that is glazed with egg yolk before you bake it. Simple, delicious, you can keep it in a tin box for a while, so it makes a perfect giveway :)

I also love making holiday cookies of all shapes and sizes and painting them with food paint.

My favorite holiday sweet is, well, that's actually really hard to answer. But, I would have to say it's a cookie that my family calls a Norwegian Crown. It's actually an almond thumbprint cookie with raspberry jam, but ours add an extra ingredient that makes it so much better. I can't ever find a recipe of this cookie called by this name.

Happy blogoversary Em!!!! What fab treats you have there. Hmm, my favourite treat to make around the holidays is plum pudding with custard for Christmas. It may be 40 degrees Celsius here at Christmas, but we always have to have our rich hot plum pud with custard and brandy cream.

Happy Anniversary! Thanks for taking the time to share every day, I always look forward to your post!
My favorite holiday treat to make is the Pine Bark, made with saltines, cooked brown sugar and butter topped with chocolate. People are always amazed they are made with crackers!

When my husband and I first got engaged and were living together, we started the tradition of making homemade sugar cookies and icing them with homemade cream cheese frosting. He never got to do that as a kid, and he had a blast that first year, so we've kept it up, and now our daughter helps to. We eat most of them, but the neighbors get some too.

Happy 2 years of having a GREAT blog. Love it.
Favorite holiday treat? Really, only one? Actually, the Chocolate Caramel Rice Crispy Treats I posted recently will be on my holiday treats list this year. I LOVED these! I may not even wait until the holidays to make them again! ;)

Happy 2nd blogiversary! I love, love, love your blog and it makes my day when I see that you've posted another delicious recipe.

My favorite treat around the holiday is my mom's Rocky Road candy. She always made it growing up, so it reminds me of being little.

This is so fun! I love your blog, and first heard of you when I saw you on a cooking competition on the food network (no idea what the show was called). Anyways, around the holidays my family makes a ton of baked goods. My favourites are mince meat pies, chocolate covered shortbread, those light pastry cookies that look like ferns (forget name), and the log.

That's right, the log. Layers of chocolate wafer, glued together with fluffly whipped cream. Soo good!

Peanut clusters. Easiest, tastiest treat for the holidays. Bag of butterscotch chips and half a bag of semi-sweet, melted. Then mix in a can of salted peanuts. Drop on wax paper and wait to set. So yummy. I make them constantly through the holiday season.

My absolute favorite treat around the holidays is flan. The Puerto Rican way, really creamy and with oozy caramel sauce on top. My mom makes an amazing one, and thanks to her, I do, too!

I've never had an advent calender before! And I know this doesn't entirely make a lot of sense in terms of accuracy in holidays, but my mom would make these amazing sweet potato matzoh balls with apricot sauce and cinnamon - she started making them for passover, but they are so good she'd make them in the winter just to please us. That calendar looked so good! And great job with your blog, I enjoy it very much.

Happy Blogiversary!
My absolute favorite holiday treat to make (AND eat!) is what my family calls, "Soul" cookies. They are Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with coconut and pecans. SOOOOO good,it's like feeding your SOUL! :)

Anna_Jeanne said...

Happy anniversary Sugar Plum! My wonderful friend Brittany L. turned me on to your blog about six months ago, and I quickly became addicted. Thanks for being so interesting and creating such tasty, attainable receipes.

My favorite holiday treat to make is called "chocolate peanut butter balls." I know, creative, right? I've also heard them called "buckeyes," particularly by people in Ohio. They're a peanut butter and powdered sugar based center, dipped in parafin-chocolate, so the chocolate sets but is all shiny and waxy. It takes some time to make them, because they have to be rolled individually and mom will scold you if they're too big. But the older I get, it turns out that's part of the fun. :)

I haven't really been baking all that long, but I'd have to say my favorite Christmas goodies to make are monster cookies (with red and green M&M's, of course!) and my mom's hot chocolate mix that has crushed peppermint mixed in it - I like to give it as gifts.

I love fancy decorated sugar cookies.
But ... they are time consuming and arduous.
My family likes "Walnut Bars" that I make at Christmas, so in order to preserve the sugar cookies, I bake a couple big batches of the yummy bars.

happy 2nd Blogiversary! Looking forward to another year filled with delish foods from you and Sugar Plum!!!

My favorite thing to make is eggnog cake! But I'm pretty much the only one that likes it so it doesn't really get made. :( Probably the kids favorite thing for me to make during the holiday is Oreo bark or ritz crackers dipped in semisweet chocolate that has been flavored with peppermint and then the dipped crackers are sprinkled with crush candy canes!

WOW! Look at all of these great comments. I had to comment myself. Don't worry - I'm not entering the giveaway. Haha.

Everyone is being so sweet. I can't believe it! I want to give you a hug.

Michelle, Julie B, chocolate crinkle cookies! Wow! I think I tried making some of those one time and the results were disastrous.

Sue, I've never had a dacquoise before. That sounds most excellent.

Page, I love pie!

Lorie, we've never made peanut butter balls before. Can you believe that?

Erin, giveaways make me giddy, too! You should comment more often. I'd love to hear from you. I'm so glad you liked those muffins... I'm glad someone tried them. I remember how good they were.

Busybee, thanks! I love all of those cookies. My grandma used to make Mexican wedding cookies.

The Louies, mmm potatoes.

Nicole, I love you! In a non-creepy way.

Emmanuelle, Ultimate Recipe Showdown...

Hannah, that's my kind of stuffing.

Dolce, YUM.

Kristin, you really can't beat Oreos. They're my favorite store-bought cookie. Actually, the only store-bought cookie that I like.

Beth, I love pumpkin pie. Where's your email address?!

Oh my gawd! Lindsey Weiss?! You read my blog? You are so famous and incredible. I'm honored.
I love buche de noel. I made one a few years ago. The little mushrooms are the cutest and best part.

Avairicenotsumi, thanks for reading! Comment more often! I'm glad you liked the recipes. I think the cake sounds really good.

LD, omigosh! That apple pie sounds amazing. I love anything with drunken in the title.

Annie, I think we could be great friends! And I love Sinatra. Dean Martin, too. And cinnamon. And cinnamon rolls. I can't resist cinnamon rolls.

Crystalin, if you only knew. When I say I'm obsessed with food, I mean it. You can ask any of my friends and family. It's on my mind all of the time. What's the secret? Well, stick with it. Try to post a couple of times a week. Don't post too much because you'll get sick of it. Commenting is very important.... comment on a lot of blogs. I think content, pictures and site design are important also.

Vivian, that does sound amazing!

Heather, please post the recipe. Make two this year.

Linda, thank you! Where was she from?

Cookienurse, we do the same with Ritz. Mmm.

Anon, thanks. You didn't leave you name or email! How am I supposed to contact you? That shortbread sounds amazing. The show was Ultimate Recipe Showdown.

Haha, Sara Larsen, only if you bake me pecan pie.

Christina, I know exactly what you're talking about. I think that's Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk's recipe.

Okay, I wanted to comment more but I have to take a shower. And I need to watch the news. There's a little boy caught inside of a balloon.

My very favorite thing to make for the holidays is peanut butter fudge. It's simple (just a peanuty version of the Hersheys cocoa fudge recipe), but it does NOT involve marshmallow fluff, and it's a tradition in my parents' house.

I just met Stephanie of Truffle a few months back and she DOES have the most delicious chocolates! I also love this site. Happy Blogiversary Emily!

My favorite holiday treat are those yummy spritz cookies. My Oma used to make those and I used to be so transfixed when she would churn out those stars, wreaths and trees from the cookie press without messing up one. The first time that I made them was well....a learning experience. Now that I have a daughter, we have made those cookies year after year and always laugh as I am turning the cookie press handle and she is frantically trying to break up the cookies gently.

Every year since reading Proust's 'swann's way', I have made madeleines during the winter holidays. The first couple of years that I made them, I even printed out the Madeleine-related passage from the book and attached it to each little bundle of treats.

With the clarifying of butter, and the seperating of eggs, and the double boiler, and the difficult to clean scalloped forms, they're way too fussy for every day baking, and make for an awesome holiday indulgence. I use a standard recipe, but substitute Makers Mark bourbon for
the rum.

The talented candy-maker featured in your givaway is a friend, so no need to include me in the givaway, but readers should rest assured that her candy is as tasty as it looks!
