O opsies. I lost again. Damn. Too much hot sauce. I love Frank's Red Hot, what can I say?!
Thank you to everyone for watching the show! Thank you for your supportive comments and emails. I'm sorry for losing again. I really am. I feel like I let everyone down. I wanted to win for all my friends and family... my grandma. I wanted to win the money so I could go to school in New York and learn more about cooking and baking.

I did the best that I could do and I don't have regrets about that. I put everything I had into that competition. I wanted to win so badly, but it just didn't happen for me. I was depressed and down for days after we filmed the show.
I'm down today, too. But I'll get over it. I'm grateful I got to go back on and try again. I don't want anyone to think I'm ungrateful. I'm worried about how I appeared on the show. There was a lot of footage of me crying behind the scenes, and I had no idea they were going to show that.
I read a post (about the show) on a forum the other day, from a man who called me a cry baby, and that the show was a bunch of crap.
I know if I put myself out there on television and this blog, I need to get used to criticism and rude remarks such as that one. It still hurt me, though. I think people need to be careful about what they they write on blogs, forums, comments, etc. I'm a real person! I know I would never write mean comments on a forum or website. I don't understand why people do it - do they have no lives?
THEN, I read some comments and reviews of my recipe on the Food Network website that upset me.
The first comment was a woman from Springfield, MO. Shouldn't Springfield sistas stick together? I guess not.
Hi Kathy. How are you today? I'm so glad you could watch the show! I love how you rated my recipe with one star, even though you didn't make it. UM, and yes, I did make it on the show again. Do you think Food Network just called and asked me to be on the show again? No. I created and tested a dozen different recipes and submitted them to the show this year. I also had to go through several other rounds before I got word that I'd be going on the show again. It was a lot of work and a lot of stress. Yes, I'm lucky, but I did work hard to be on the show again. You know? Not to mention the work ON the show... hours of interviews and cooking. Kathy, if I ever run into you in Springfield, I will sucker punch you in the face.
Hi Antoinette. I'm sorry I wasn't professional and mature enough for you. Do they have coaches for that? I should really work with one. I'll see if I can schedule something on Tuesday afternoons... Antoinette, are you passionate about something? Is there something that drives you and inspires you every day? Cooking is what I'm passionate about. It's something I was born to do.
Yes, I cried on the show but do you think I could help it? I did NOT want to cry and embarrass myself. Who wants to be all red and splotchy with makeup running down their face on national television? I could NOT control it. I wanted this so much. I hope you can understand.

I wanted to win - it would have changed my life, but I'm okay with it. I think Gail deserved to win and I'm happy for her. I'm going to work on my blog, contests and other projects, and I'll find my way. I'm ready to move on and I'm excited for the future. With that, I'm announcing my official retirement from Ultimate Recipe Showdown. :) Let's move on to happier blog posts, okay?
Thank you! Love you all!

oh emily, you didn't let us down!!! just b/c you didn't win the grand prize doesn't mean you didn't create some fabulous recipes ;) *hugs*
ReplyDeleteOh girl, you did great. Sucks that you lost darn that hot sauce haha..I hope that you can brush off those cruddy comments and know that you are Awesome! Would love to see them try something like that....
ReplyDeleteAnywho, I hope you can somehow get that money for school. ALthough I would insanely JEALOUS haha...I say it's time for a Bake Sale :P
Oh girl, I am sending you hugs! You did an AMAZING job, so don't doubt that for one second! Don't listen to the crazies out there. You are VERY talented and did an awesome job! You should be VERY proud of yourself. You are a superstar in my book!
ReplyDeleteI am in your corner all the way, 100 percent - I was all psyched to be jealous and then it turned to mad, disappointed and upset. I am still in your corner! !00%
ReplyDeleteHey Emily.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I think you were awesome on the show! My boyfriend and I were rooting for you! =)
Even though you didn't win the top prize, you totally rocked it. I've read your blog for awhile now, and I love how honest you are with everything.
(And your recipes? Amazing.)
I'm sorry people can be such jerks over the internet and write such rude things.
You're wonderful, and no matter what you choose to do, people are going to be proud of you.
Just keep doing your thing and never stop doing what you love.
Emily, congratulations and keep your chin up, you made it as a finalist the second time on this challenge, that in itself an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteWith every failure, you're one step closer to success. You tested your dishes, you like them, you believe in them? Go for it.
As for your crying (haven't seen the show yet up here in Canada), you proved that you're only human.
As for your critics, get used to it. There are other Food Network types that get razzed even worse - comes with the territory.
Again, congrats, regain your poise and move forward.
Emily,
ReplyDeleteFirst, let me say that while I'm sure you aren't apologizing to someone like me who reads your blog (and doesn't know you personally), please know you have NOTHING to apologize for. I think you did amazing and your dish looked delicious (I also love Frank's Red Hot - and cheese...and pasta...and chicken...). I never thought to put those things together until seeing that show and you have totally inspired me to try it myself.
You know what I loved most about you? Your passion. It's so obvious and you can tell that you are totally driven to do this. You are meant to be cooking and I have no doubts that great things are in store for you.
Stay strong, don't let any of the negativity out there get you down!
Hang in the Emily - you were great and you are passionate about your craft. Don't give up on your dreams and don't let nasty comments by people get you down. Can't wait to see what you do next.
ReplyDeleteEm, I watched the show and was on the edge of my seat and rooting for you all the time. Please don't feel like you let anyone down or even yourself. You did fantastic work!
ReplyDeleteIt is always difficult to hear criticism from people who are ill-informed and just mean for being so but like you said, when we put ourselves out there, those are things to be expected... it does not mean however that it is easy to take.
Sending tight hugs and hang in there; you are already a success and will be an even bigger success. I did not Guy's kind and sincere comment that you are talented and can cook.
I am so sorry you did not win, but you are still a winner in my books. I am so impressed with your talent to make up new recipes and put yourself out there. I think the judges were very impressed with your overall efforts and no one could ever fault you on your passion for this. You did not let anyone down and anyone who made rude comments about your recipes or your emotions just don't count. Pfffft on them I say. I just know you will achieve your dream of culinary school somehow. I am so happy that twice I was able to tell people to watch this show and tell them that the heading on my blog was designed by you! You just keep looking forward and don't look back. You are awesome and have so much more to look forward to in your life. Big hugs for you.
ReplyDeleteI'll sucker punch that Kathy too if she ever shows her face in small town Nebraska! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou're awesome Emily! I know you'll be back on the show! They LOVE you. (And so do we!)
Listen, you have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about..... I do not have the guts to even try....Well done kiddo, I know you will move to greater things still.....all this is just to make you really strong!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I'm so upset that I forgot to set my Tivo! I am going to search for a rerun of your episode. Secondly, please do not listen to these rude people! I think sometimes the internet makes people feel like they allowed to say and write horrible things that they wouldn't say in "real life." It's appalling that someone would rate your recipe without trying it! Unacceptable! And lastly, it is NOT unprofessional to cry. Camilla Saulsbury cried when she didn't win Ultimate Recipe Showdown and I happen to think she is very professional - she's won a ton of cooking competitions and has her own cookbook! I know it's cheesy to say this, but just making it onto the show is a huge honor and I hope you are proud of yourself :)
ReplyDeleteHey , it's all part of the journey. You did great to achieve this twice!!! As for negative people, if you are being talked about, you are being thought about. Shrug it off, its there problem.
ReplyDeleteEmily-- don't let them (the internet jerks) get you down. And as far as your recipe goes: I made it for dinner last night, after watching you on the show. The only thing I did differently was use a mild sauce, because my husband doesn't like too much heat. Guess what? It was *delicious*. I loved it, and we had so much, we had it for dinner again tonight.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, and I know your future will hold many bright things. :)
I didn't watch the show, but I've been reading your blog almost since it began... I think it was one of the first foodie blogs I was ever introduced to and it opened to me a whole wide world of cooking and blogs to me. I love how you have tons of original recipes and the little stories that go with them are pithy and humorous. I finally got inspired enough to start my own, although it's not nearly so cute looking and I only have three months worth of posts.
ReplyDeletePlease know that I love your blog and I find it very inspiring. I really hope you get to go to culinary school someday, but you seem to have so much perseverance, I'm sure you will.
http://practicalepicure.blogspot.com/
Emily, I thought you did great! I even cried with you. I guess we can be cry babies together. As for all the haters, they're just jealous. Bwaha. Sorry, I had to go there. Keep up with the great recipes. We adore you!
ReplyDeleteforget the haters!!! i think what you did is brave and amazing and you should be really freakin proud of yourself! don't let some jealous fools get you down :)
ReplyDeleteEmily, I just happen to read your blog moments before the show aired. I NEVER watch that show, so because of you they had at least one new viewer. I thought you were adorable, you were so busy the whole time, I would be crying too from the pressure. But don't you worry, your time will come, in the meantime thanks for all the awesome recipes and entertainment with your blog.
ReplyDeleteI do cooking contests too, and it's hard to lose. The only thing you can do is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start on another contest. I know it's hard to read crap from mean people - mean people SUCK! You are good at what you do; I know because I have seen your name many times as a winner. Remember that; you are a WINNER! Even if you didn't win this round, you won a nice trip to NYC ... did those mean people win a trip to NYC? No wonder they're so mean!
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that you will get to culinary school someday - keep the dream :)
Ditto what everyone said. You were amazing. Don't ever apologize for giving your all.
ReplyDeleteThere was one thing that WAS annoying, though. How gosh darned gorgeous and really skinny you looked!
Do not let the Anotinette's or Kathy's get to you. Don't quit go back fighting for the spot and winnings that you totally deserve! You are great, young, talented and fabulous!
ReplyDeleteYou do not have to justify your actions! You love cooking and are passionate about it! Keep it up!
Emily,
ReplyDeleteI know you don't know me, but I thought you outta know that I admire you and your courage. I also think that your an AMAZING chef, and I practically run home everyday after school to read your blog :) And even though some people can sit behind their computers and write lengthy paragraph’s about you and your reactions...I personally think it hasn't got much to do with you but more the fact that they are extremely boardm self-centered and dam right bitchy!
Anyways I love you and your recipes so please keep it up!!
B.t.w -my brother thinks your a total babe :P
Aw, Em, I'm really sorry to hear you didn't win, but absolutely no one is disappointed in you. I've always admired your ability to create recipes for contests, and I look forward to many more creations of yours.
ReplyDeleteAs for the haters, you can't worry about what others say because they'll do what they do and it's out of your control. People base their opinion on so little and they are the ones who end up missing out.
OK, here is the thing. F**k everyone who says anything negative about you and your journey. Could they do the things you have done?? Hell no. Do they have the drive and determination that you do? Of course not. It is so easy to be critical and not walk in someone else's shoes. I so admire what you are doing and if I had some spare cash, I would just send you to cooking school. Bravo to you. You are an inspiration to everyone who has ever wanted anything. Go!
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon your blog several months ago and have been hooked ever since. I was thrilled for you when I read that you'd be on the Food Network -way to go! Screw the naysayers - they are just jealous.
ReplyDeleteAnd anyone who rates a recipe without actually trying it is a cottonheaded ninnymuggins.
I'm so sorry you didn't win. I think you don't let anyone down, quite the opposite, you're inspirational : full of energy, determined, sweet and funny. Don't let the buggers bring you down. So you're emotional and cried, well, you're human!
ReplyDeleteBig hug!
Oh Emily, sweetie, you didnt let anybody down! i think its amazing you got on the show a second time around in the first place and you did a great job. as always. dont forget that!
ReplyDeletetheres probably hundreds of people out there, just like myself, who love you and your blog and believe me when i say, we'd all open a can of whoop ass on that kathy woman for you anytime! ;P
she's just jealous and tv can be an irritating experience. ive just learned that again myself with my tv thing... not nice. they love their drama and its rude in my opinion they showed you sad like that. insensitive you-know-whats!
i'm certain you will make it to culinary school in the foreseeable future, i did too after all, and you'll be amazing.
its sad people get so mean on the internet just because its anonymous and they can vent if theyve had a bad day or whatever. but youre right, they shouldnt forget we're all people behind our blogs and all that and we have feelings and bad days, too. especially when youve just lost out on such a lump of money after having invested so much time and effort...
you would absolutely have deserved to win, not just for what you did on the show but because youre one of the sweetest and most talented people!!! good things will happen to good people, i do believe in that. i'm sending you a big hug and chin up, girl! ;)
People can be such jerks. I think you're terrific though!
ReplyDeleteBless you, you're a sweetheart. I love that you are so positive about this experience, even though you didn't get the outcome you wanted. You've still suceeded though, and gotten further than any of us ever will!!
ReplyDeleteAnd sadly, there's always going to be people who want to rain on your parade, but I think that those people are making up for the things lacking in their life. And for everyone person who rains on your parade, there'll be like 1 million of us getting that sunshine back out!! Don't let anyone get you down because you don't deserve to be called out by anyone!! I think you're fab, keep doing what you're doing :)
You're so young that you have plenty of time to win big competitions in your life. It's these little losses that make you stronger for next time. Keep trucking!
ReplyDeleteI will help you sucker punch Kathy. No problem. Emily, you are sweet and endearing and even though we have never met I can tell you are a lovely person. Your recipes (and you know I have made them)are fantastic. You seem to have a sweet tooth like I do! People can be so nasty, but it is usually the ignorant ones and I'm sure they have no life. Move one girl, we are all in your corner and can't wait to see how far you will go in the cooking field. I know you have what it takes, it just may take a while to get there but you will!
ReplyDeleteOh, you did wonderfully; you should be really proud of yourself. I would have cried, too. We were cheering hard for you Sunday night and I was so sad for you when you didn't win.
ReplyDeleteBut you know, good things are yet to come. You just wait and see...
And boo to negative comments. Some people just have too much time on their hands to devote to ugly comments.
You certainly did not let anyone down. Hold on to your dreams and passions Emily and your time will come.I have yet to see the show but it will show up on the Canadian Food Network eventually.
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteI saw you on the show and you did great! You'd be surprised how things happen for a reason. Stay focused on your dream. It will happen if you persevere. Your passion and drive will bring you where you want to be. The fact that you're on tv is such a great start!
What culinary school do you want to attend?
Carmen
I love your blog and your recipes! My family and friends love your recipes too! You inspire me to cook new and different things!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I watched the show and were pulling for you! We thought you did wonderful!
Don't let those rude people who are hiding behind their computer screens get to you! They probably entered the competition and didn't make it, so they decided to take it out on you! Keep up the good work, and your wonderful recipes that make so many people happy!
I'm still trying to figure out "Crawfish and Andouille Sausage Pizza" as a comfort food???
ReplyDeleteYOU SHOULD HAVE WON!!!!! Not cool of Food Network. But don't let that stop you from being fabulous - you rock, Em!!
ReplyDeleteHey girl - we (hubby and I) watched the show the other night. I think it's got to be a HUGE honor to have been chosen to be on the show not once but twice. I think that says volumes about your cooking! All you can do is live and learn from the experience. You have great things in your future!
ReplyDeleteEmily! you are amazing. I do not (and will not) understand how people can be so mean! I really think they are just jealous of the passion, creativity, and talent you have. You have so many wonderful readers and supporters out here that are by your side, reading your blog and lovin your recipes every day! Don't let the cranky ones get you down. Sending lots of love your way!
ReplyDeleteAll that work and time for a blog too. Theres a lot of passion there!
ReplyDeleteI think you just need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and have at it again!
I told everyone who saw the show about your blog here! Though I was sad that you didn't win, I was still proud you made it on. I don't usually watch the show, but I'm glad I got to see you in action!
ReplyDeleteOh and btw, the crying clips and such? It just made you seem like a perfectionist. And believe me, that is NOT a bad thing!
Emily! I think you did amazing and I felt your passion with your tears and I have to admit I let a few fall myself just watching your heartbreak. But I think you did amazing! I was so impressed with you and your recipes as always. You will make it girl, and you will do amazing things in this world! Don't let the losers get you down. They are just jealous because you rock and they suck!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow I'm sorry you have to deal with crap from complete strangers! I love your site and your recipes are very unique. Not everyone would be brave enough to cook on national television, good for you!
ReplyDeleteYou were brave to go on this show, first of all. And don't listen to the meanies, I have a blog too and I get some nasty comments sometimes, I don't understand why either; some people just like criticizing others and can't put themselves in other's shoes. I know I would have cried too. it's very stressful and you need to let out that pent up stress.
ReplyDeleteHang in there and concentrate on some other things for now. Cheers!
Hi Emily. Something that you wrote, you wanted to win and it would have changed your life. I believe that not winning has also changed your life. You are doing something you love and have a passion for. Winning or losing, it’s not going to stop you from your dreams, goals and passions. You are an inspiration and I’m blessed by your blog. Sharing your gifts and talents and your life with us is wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteAs for negative & critical bloggers, I see them as arm chair athletes. If they could do better, then they should be out there on the field or in public office or on the stage. They should be out there, hands on and making a difference.
Thank you Emily for making a difference!
Emily,
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, you did not let us down! I was so proud of you. You did your best, and that's all you can do. Viewers should respect that, and perhaps they just don't understand how much winning that money would have meant to you. I know it would have changed your life, but I also know that you will go to culinary school someday. You WILL, and please don't forget me when you're famous. :)
Luv you!
Well don't you worry because you have all of us bloggers behind you! We think you are great!!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for following your dream!! try not to let other get you down. You have a right to go for what you are passionate about. I love to cook and bake but have no guts to actually do what you have done and enter contests. I found your blog and I love it. I tried your maple pumpkin granola and my family and I loved it. Thanks for sharing your recipes!!
ReplyDeleteJessie-from www.foodbringsfamiliestogether.blogspot.com
Well count me as another person who doesn't know you but I was really rooting for you!!! I love your recipes and you are just adorable!! I did make your mac and cheese and we all loved it!! Who doesn't love mac and cheese plus I love hot wings snd so does my family. 2 of our favorite things in one recipe! Thank you!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo, I didn't see the show b/c I don't have cable anymore. I was so excited you were on again and am hoping the show comes on Hulu, but it hasn't yet. I was bummed that you didn't win. I can't imagine how hard it must be to come so close to $25,000 again, and walk away without it, again.
ReplyDeleteAs for the coach teaching you to be more professional, after she helps you out send her my way, as I am big baby and cry too often and say stupid things on a hourly basis. I'm glad Antoinette has it all together, though. It's nice to know someone does.
And as for Kathy, we should organize a sucker punching party and surpise her one day with eggs on her door and toilet paper all over her trees. But we should do that before we get coached on how to be more professional. Professional people don't throw eggs or TP. Or sucker punches.
I love your blog, have tried at least 16 of your recipes, and ALL of them have turned out great. I have been reading for over a year and think you are incredibly talented.
And as for the recipe, it looks SO GOOD! I can't wait to try it! Don't let mean people get you down.
Aww, Emily! You know better than to read those stupid comments. People are really harsh online and unjustifiably so because they never have to face those they have accused or mocked or etc. They are mean and insensitive and you can't read their comments or let them get to you. It is a proud accomplishment to even get on the show to compete, much more, do it twice!! Congrats and GREAT JOB to YOU, you did so well! You are an awesome cook, you let no one down! Keep your chin up, hon!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to be there with you and I will stand behind and cheer any competition you do! I'll even sing for you again if it makes the competition happier for you!
ReplyDeleteDoing anything publicly, whether it's being on TV or blogging, or writing articles, requires a thick skin. Yes, people who do this stuff do have lives, but the world is made up of a lot of different people who aren't going to like the same thing. The hardest thing about blogging (and living for that matter!) is to learn to accept it and move on. You are doing admirably so far considering how long you've been doing this. The day will come when you'll cry less and kick more ass.
We all know you're going to make it big some day. Don't give up. Heck, go ahead and be in the competition again next year. I know you'll get chosen.
Win or not, you did a fabulous job, Emily - congrats on your awesome achievement!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, I've been reading you for a long time, but haven't ever commented. The internet can be a really mean place. People hide behind the anonymity to say things that they would never say in real life.
ReplyDeleteI think your recipes are amazing, and it was wonderful seeing you on the Food Network. You should totally start pitching a cook book with some of your recipes--I bet you'd have those judges (and evil Food Network commenters) eating their words as you rolled into culinary school with fat pockets.
Don't let them get you down, the Internet is chock full of trolls and people who make themselves feel better in dogging others. Good luck to you and thank you so much for having this blog! I've made so many awesome recipes from this site and I can't thank you enough.
ReplyDeleteHow could you possible have let us down? Did you see any of us on the show? I can only imagine the thousands and thousands of entries they got and YOU got that spot!
ReplyDeleteApparentlt those posters didn't listen to their Mom's-if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
I beleve that if you keep the faith and keep entering contesy=ts you will get that money to fulfil your dream!
omg Emily!! I can't believe I missed this! You should be SO SO proud of yourself for making it on to the show! That is a huge accomplishment and I dream of getting onto the food network! Amazing! I am so proud of you!!!
ReplyDeleteI missed the episode! Darn it!
ReplyDeleteBut anyways, I still think it's impressive that out of over 10,000 recipes, Food Network chose you to be featured on their show AGAIN. Isn't that a feat in itself?
I'm sad you didn't win, but there will always be more chances in the future.
I agree with all the other comments- you should be proud of yourself! :)
Your recipe was great anyway and people who are badmouthing can't probably even cook scrambled eggs, so let it go :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you looked great on the show anyway, and one day you will win even bigger and better that the prize on this show!
keep on cookin girl and doing what you're doing. you're great at what you do and you are entitled to be upset over losses. Screw people who don't understand that. I'd like to see what they would do in a similar situation.
ReplyDeletebesos.
While surfing some other blogs, I noticed that one my favorite bloggers refers to her haters as the "League of Unhappy Women". I guess your critics are members too.
ReplyDeleteNever give up on your dreams. It really doesn't matter what those people think about you...they aren't part of your life. I wouldn't even dignify the remarks of idiots with a comment.
You are hilaroius and way to defend yourself! I think congratulations are still in order!! I would have loved your recipe :)
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I missed your URS episode! Don't worry about being a winner with them! You're a winner with us, all of your blog readers! I just made your red velvet cake again! Love that! (And I saw in my email that you requested to follow me on Twitter! As soon as Lent is over I'm going to accept your request!) Your jolly spirit makes you a winner in my book! And you're absolutely hilarious! You get 100 points for telling Ms. Thang that you would sucker punch her in the face! lol Keep up all your great work!
ReplyDeleteLOL...I love your comments back to those recipe reviewers. Let's see either of them work so hard to come up with a bunch of recipes, enter them and be on the show, not once...but twice!
ReplyDeleteYou're awesome and I think your mac & cheese looks delish! My mom and I were rooting you on and she kept referring to you like we old friend because I read your blog. :) You're going to win someday, I just know it!!
Are you kidding?? That's crazy talk. You should be so proud that you got on the show TWICE...In my wildest dreams I wouldn't even be able to make it on once!!
ReplyDeleteBe proud of yourself...I know losing sucks, but just think about the thousands of recipes you beat to get on the show.
And Fuck anyone who talks shit - they didn't get on the show now, did they? People just talk crap because it makes them feel better about their own failings.
I apologize for my bad language - I needed it for emphasis and effect. :)
You rock. I don't watch much tv, but I do read your blog. You're inspiring in the kitchen and with your enthusiasm in general.
ReplyDeleteIgnore the haters! You were awesome, and even my cynical husband thought you should get to win!
ReplyDeleteThe haters are all just jealous. *HUGS*
1. Mean people suck and should be ignored. Instead, focus on all the positive comments you got!
ReplyDelete2. You didn't let anybody down--you gave it your all. What would be letting yourself down is if you used this as a reason to stop--and it doesn't seem like you will.
3. I was sitting on my couch and crying, too--and it wasn't my experience, or my dream, or my stress. The people who criticized you about this are mean people. (See number 1.)
4. You WILL get to culinary school. It could be that by losing this competition something really awesome has been opened up for you to step into--maybe you had to lose to get something a million times better. Who knows?
5. Take some time to feel bad and then get back into your (new) kitchen--this is what you do.
6. You are a beautiful person and a talented cook/baker. Don't forget that.
Ugh, I'm so sorry about those comments and don't understand why people think it's ok to post something online that they wouldn't say to you in person. They must have sad lives to be spewing negativity like that.
ReplyDeleteIt's completely inspiring and AMAZING that you got to go to URS twice! Your recipes are always fabulous and you have won SO many contests already that I really look up to you! I know this is just the beginning and that you are going to be a culinary superstar!!
Emily~
ReplyDeleteI was crying with you. Some people are just jerks with no compassion for other people and nothing better to do. I always wonder why they bother to post things like that. You are an awesome cook and you'll get your dream one way or another. Don't give up. Look at all you've achieved so far! You are a rockstar, girl!! xoxo
seriously you are fabulous! incredibly talented. keep being inspired and keep sharing everything! you'll make it.
ReplyDeleteI watched the show and I think you did a great job- people get overwhelmed and cry, it happens to everyone- it just doesn't always get televised. Don't worry about what those crazy people say- stop reading that stuff. I'm impressed you got so far- you really have what it takes. Keep doing what you are doing!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily,
ReplyDeleteJeez, I'm sorry you didn't win, and I'm really sorry for the horrible comments people have made. While technology has made many wonderful things possible, including your blog, it also dissociates people from one another.
If those commenters had to write and mail a letter in order to comment, they'd think about how they might feel getting a letter like that, and probably wouldn't write it. Or if they were given the opportunity to talk to you in person, they wouldn't be so nasty, either. But when it's more or less anonymous and instant, then they feel a separation and don't even think about how it will affect others. It's like they're having a conversation close friends, except they're typing away and sending. I've done it myself, and regretted it later (and sent a separate e-mail to apologize). It's way too easy.
All of this is a roundabout way of saying that we all probably need thicker skins when we write/blog/appear in public, but that you also shouldn't take this personally. Were those commenters to meet you in person they wouldn't say those things.
All the best to you.
NO!!! dont retire!! you CAN&WILL win!! those judges LOVED you! they had only kind and encouraging words for you! piss on the meanies who critique you. you were crying because you truly LOVE what youre doing&are totally committed . it obviously means alot to you. Oh PLEEZEE dont stop entering!! remember guy said that you keep submitting "ROCK STAR" recipes???!!! we here are all extremely proud of you!! xxoo #1 auntie&little fam
ReplyDeleteI've been an avid reader of your blog for the last year, and I was soo excited to see you on URS. I was rooting for you and was so happy for you that you made it to the top two. Trust me, if I was on that show with that much pressure I'd be freaking out the minute I walked in. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll be successful! BTW I love the flower headband..so cute!
ReplyDeleteIts always a pleasure to visit you here on Sugar Plum and to see you on TV. I thought you were amazing on the competition. Yes it stinks that you didn't win but you have so many people in your corner .... it is just a matter of time before your name is called as WINNER!! Meanwhile please just keep doing what you do and being who you are - that is enough for us.
ReplyDeletehere in Greece we say that to win it doesn' matter..that counts is the trip!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily,
ReplyDeleteSo you cryed on TV, listen you weren't the first person to do that. I thought you were great, and your receipe awesome. Don't you worry about it, you did great and thats all that counts. You and my daughter Sara needs get together, she loves to cook and bake as you do. You two would be great. Hey, maybe the NEXT FOOD NETWORK STAR. How about that. AWESOME.
Good for you Emily for telling those women where to stick it. You have lots of people rootin' for you and ready for your cookbook!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, I just watched the show yesterday. I recorded it on my Tivo. I thought you did a really good job and I kept thinking that there is no way I could look that good on tv! I think you have a lot of talent and I believe you will go far.
ReplyDeleteI also want to go to culinary school, and I'm struggling to save the money.
Love the blog!
..... oh, yeah - and about that man on the contest forum who called you a crybaby ...... everybody knows what a joke he is. He's been to ONE big cook off contest and thinks he knows it all now, pfffffttttt.
ReplyDeleteEmily, you are the coolest person I know. Even if I don't really know you. I hope you can move to NY soon so that we can one day be friends. You're a bad ass cook. It's so inspiring that someone my age has done all that you have... Keep it up!!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, I'm Michelle from El Salvador. I found your blog looking for some recipes and i loved it. I thinks the recipes are great and the pics are very artistic. Don't pay attention to Food network judges or bad comments. Food Network is a mafia and they're so partial, his "chefs" are a bunch of arrogant people that when it comes to show they're nothing, there's a lot more creative and talented people out there, don't pay attention to them.
ReplyDeleteI wish you best in all your projects and i'll keep checking your blog. :)
I just watched the show last night, I had dvr'd it and didn't want to read your post until I had watched.
ReplyDeleteFirst, your recipe for the mac and cheese looks AWESOME and I can't wait to try it. Secondly, you rock girlie! I have no idea why someone would write a mean comment about you, it makes no sense...I wanted you to win so badly and really thought that your recipes were great! Keep your chin up and be proud that you even MADE it to that show, I think that is the hugest accomplishment of all!!
Girl! I wish I could have seen the show. I think it is just super cool that you were JUST able to be in a SHOW on FOOD NETWORK, HELLO! You go! You work hard for everything you do, down from your blog to all the recipes you submit. Remember that winning and accolations do not make you who you are, you are what your talents and gifts have made you because God created you so. I tell myself the same. Another ooportunity will come and WHO knows when the time will come for you to WIN BIG!!! You are great remember! :)
ReplyDeleteHello emily,
ReplyDeleteWell said, my friend!
I think that you did great! I am a true fan of all of your divine recipes! They never fail me!
Never!
Hi Emily, We don't know each other, but I saw you on URS and started to follow your blog. Your soup sounded amazing and so did the mac and cheese (I like hot sauce, too). I think that the Food Network ought to have you on "The Next Food Network Star" or try to help you with your goal of culinary school. Puppy
ReplyDeleteDon't give up. My husband and I rooted for you the entire time. Just watching the show and listening to the judges comments you can see how talented you are. Third times a charm.
ReplyDeleteEmily-
ReplyDeleteI know that it is hard to take all those comments, but know that there are a lot of people out there that love all the wonderful recipes you create and look forward to each new blog post. Never give up on your dream!
I don't know you personally, but I wanted to let you know that you should not be ashamed of yourself for letting your friends&family down! This is something you did for yourself and I am sure it made you learn a lot of things. I think everyone is proud of you, you did your best and you should be proud of yourself as well. No one will judge you, everyone loves you! :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, for the comments, I think some people out there don't understand emotional people, but try to not judge them how they judged you. I'm sure you can be the better person by trying to put yourself in there shoes and not having harsh feelings for them!
Anyways I will continue to support you and your blog! I really love it, I check it at least thrice a week. :)
I watched, I yelled, I clapped, I cried. I really wish I could have jumped through the tv to change the judges' minds. You did great, you looked great, and your food looked the best! I have no doubt you'll find your way to school somehow, someway. You're too talented not to! I'm just excited to be able to tell someone someday that I knew you when you were just a blogger!
ReplyDeleteYou should be proud to be on the Showdown not once, but twice and know that you are reaching so many people every day with your hilarious writing, personality and creative culinary skills. Regardless, Food Network is not the end all and the people who left nasty comments are obviously lacking some major empathy genes. Anyone who is truly passionate about something and has had to work for it knows what it is like to cry until your eyes are swollen. If anything, we should feel sorry for those who do not know the feeling to care about something so much that it brings both incredible elation when successful and sadness when you narrowly miss. Ignore, move on and continue to prove them wrong with your skill and passion. We are all cheering and learning from you.
ReplyDeleteWhat about some posts that gave you compliments? Write a post with those. The people who are rude...well....they are just JEALOUS!!!! Keep on cookin' and bakin'...I so enjoy all your own recipes
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteYou were honest about your experience and did your best...nothing to be ashamed of at all!! The fact the judges remembered you and focused on you was a good thing, too! Something wonderful will come your way!!
I think people who are severe critics are just so full of jealousy. You did an amazing job--regardless if you won or not, look at all the accomplishments you've mastered in the kitchen. keep it up girly!
ReplyDeleteIt was an enormous accomplishment to get on there at all, let alone twice! And you're going to get on there again. Don't stop trying!
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't even read those comments or if you do, you'll have to ignore the bad ones.
We all support you, love your blog, and will support you when you try again. Look at all the positive thinkers you have in your comments!
And here's a little piece of advice from an old trooper: figure the Food Network will show EVERYTHING, even if they say they won't.
Thank you everyone!
ReplyDeleteAnon contest-cooker, :)
He makes me SO mad! He needs to be slapped. He was in a burger contest years ago and he thinks he knows everything.
aww girl!! I'm so sorry for all the stress those nasty people are saying!! You rock and don't ever think different!
ReplyDeleteI think you're awesome and if I had $25,000 I'd give it to you in a heartbeat so you could go to culinary school. I really would.
ReplyDeleteI have always been reading your blog and I think you are fantastic! Please ignore all the rude comments and don't let them affect you, because they are so not true :( All the best for everything!
ReplyDeleteI'm the 101st commenter! All supporting you! That must mean something! Don't let those meanies get to you, there are always going to be haters in your life, the more you succeed, the more haters you get! Hope you feel better xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteDon't listen to silly comments, only the constructive ones. I admire you and your bravery. I think you did a fabulous job on the show. Don't ever quit! You have talent. I wish you could apply for a grant or scholarship or something!
Hey Emily Ben here, (remember Quaker Oats?) Congrats on your finish. As we both know its an acommplishment within itself just to get there, then to perform on tv? I hope that you find all that you are looking for! Have you ever thought of doing a pastry mail order biz? That would be perfect for you to start up your cakes, and pastries:) Also remember this its great to be able to go to culinary school, I didn't, instead I have a degree in Finance, but look where I ended up, lol! I recently placed 2nd in California Iron Chef, kinda sucked but hey out of over 1,000 recipes and 8 top chefs from the bay area , I made it and did my best. Your time is coming just hold on! I'll give ya a shout out on Top Chef watch for it:) Have a great day Em, and congrats to you and Eric:)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new house and getting on URS again! I try to avoid reading forum comments -- to avoid losing faith in humanity.
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteFirst, don't let negative comments and reviews get you down. You will always find them. Some people just have to be that way. I know they can hurt, but shake the off and keep going.
Second, the panel of judges even think you are born to do this, so hang in there. It seems that this is meant to be, so it will work out some how. Have faith. You are doing fine, and you will be an outstanding chef in time. You have a pot of people routing for you.
I just saw the show and think you did great! I'm very emotional as well and would not have been able to hold my tears in either. Sorry other people can be so inconsiderate without attempting to see things your way, but please keep doing what you love and we'll keep cheering you on =D.
ReplyDeleteI watched a rerun of your episode last week and you really stuck with me! Don't apologize for not winning...how many 23 year olds have made it to Food Network competitions TWICE? Your dish looked amazing and I don't even *like* buffalo chicken. And the soup...no comment can do justice for how much I wanted some! I have no question in my mind you'll not only go to culinary school but also be very successful.
ReplyDeleteSeeing as you are so talented, have you considered selling a book of recipes? I'd definitely be willing to pay!
I just saw the episode last night. You did great & you were 2nd runner up. That must be a very proud moment for you even if you didn't win. Maybe you can try again & I'm sure you'll kick butt next time!
ReplyDeleteYou are fab Em. It's just a sad fact that there's plenty of people out there that take pleasure in trying to shoot down others. Congrats on making it so far, and on all the other successes you have and will have in the future.
ReplyDeleteI saw your episode of Ultimate Recipe Showdown. You lost and its no big deal, but I wouldn't hang your culinary career on winning 25K in URS. It just a television show and 25K doesn't hurt but it won't make your culinary career either. Its only a drop in the bucket if you want to go to a big named culinary school like CIA, FCI or Johnson and Wales.
ReplyDeleteIts my opinion that culinary school isn't going to make culinary career for you. An individual who has gone to culinary school and someone who no culinary education is going to make the same amount of money and do the same basic work when you 1st hit a restaurant. Whoever learns and can survive is the one who will make it. Culinary school doesn't guarantee anything. I know a few chefs/restaurant owners who often prefer individuals who don't go to culinary school as they don't have deal with "new kids who think they are hot shots with a chip on their shoulder" or they like individuals who have worked a variety of culinary jobs from being a short order cook to a fancy sous chef. They feel those people are more well rounded than individuals who have only gone to culinary school. A few chefs have told me they don't regret culinary school, but wouldn't have gone in hindsight. My point if I haven't beaten it to death is that you don't need culinary school to make in culinary world. If you can do the long hours, don't mind working holidays, and can deal with temperment of head chef's then you can do it.
Start by calling restaurants to see if they will let you stage. Stage at as many restaurants as you can and learn. You don't get paid to stage and you often get stuck doing the jobs no else wants, but you gain experience. You might eventually get hired and work your through the ranks.
This only my $0.02.
Best of Luck
Hey, Emily! I finally watched the DVRed show last night and even though I knew the outcome, I still was biting my nails at the end. I thought you did amazingly well and I'm dying to try your mac-and-cheese recipe. You are so talented and you will get there someday! My husband and I were both rooting for you the first time around and we still are!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is one of my faves in my reader so sending you some lovin' via the "I Love Your Blog" award. :) http://bit.ly/9S08A5
Hi Emily
ReplyDeletePlease do not give up. Have you contacted the school you want to go to and see if they have a financial aid program. The government has initiated several good student loan programs and I know they do include specialty schools and trade schools such as Culinary Schools. The beauty of the student loans is that you do not have to start paying them back until you have graduated and are working.
I would not listen to the negative people. They always have something to say about anybody who is doing more than them. The said part is that most of the naysayers don't have the courage to do what you did! Congrats on your acheivements so far! The best is yet to come from you!
Oh, man! I'm sorry other people have turned this into something ugly.
ReplyDeleteYou rock and by now you should know it!
~ingrid
NEVER let anyone take away your amazing passion for cooking and baking!!!! Your talent has inspired me to continue baking even when life is crazy and busy. I think that it is a HUGE honor to be on Food Network and you can only have one winner....So who cares, if you were invited back twenty times and lost every one...you were invited back because you posed a challenge and come up with brilliant recipes!! Continue doing what you do best and don't let stupid people get you down!!! There's not enough time in this world to let their comments hurt you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on making it to the final! What an incredible honor! THANK YOU for inspiring me in the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteHi, Emily!
ReplyDeleteI, too, watched both your episodes & was really pulling for you!
I am just coming into this blog, so I haven't read all the comments, but was reminded of Julie & Julia where her friends said she should put a Paypal basket on her blog so people could send her money!
You have so many supporters... Why don't you do that?
How wonderful to have the love & support of people you don't even "know", helping you with your dreams?
~Just a thought.
Go Kick Ass, Girl!
=D
Oh I saw that episode! I thought your fried chicken mac and cheese looked so yummy. I'm sorry you didn't get to win, but what a fun opportunity!
ReplyDeleteEmily - You are so great, people act like high school mean girls throughout life and it's pretty sad. You're a human being and you're totally entitled to be upset when you feel upset, happy when you feel happy and show whatever emotion you want! Forget those people - they wish they were up there being as talented, young, beautiful, and fabulous as you! You will make what you want to happen - happen. Everything takes time. At our age it's very easy to get impatient when our lofty goals don't just work out perfectly. I still want to go to cooking school and just can't figure out how to make that happen.
ReplyDeleteI know I've said it before, but I am sooooo impressed by how accomplished you are already. The fact that you can still show emotion on TV doesn't make you unprofessional, it makes you down to earth and human. People have a lot of self doubt, and I'm sorry they misplaced it on you. Keep doing what you're doing and working towards your goals! I know you can do it!
i'm going to be honest with you ! i cant believe this, i was searching around for the best choc-chip cookie ever, and i tumbled down your website, i loved all your cookie recipes * preparing one as she types*, then i was shocked to see your picture ! i immediately recognized you from URS !! such a coincidence since i live in dubai and just *happened* to find your website! so dont listen to haters who say the show dnt serve you good ! the fact that i knew you from URS made me more confident to try the recipe cuz lets be honest not all the recipes u pull off the internet are good *smells the batter* ...i really wanted you to win !! good luck and continue doing what you luv !! and remember everything happens for a reason
ReplyDeleteps * you gained yourself a new fan*
with love all the way from dubai,
Reem
Hi Reem! You're so sweet! Thank you so much! I hope you like the cookies. :)
