M oving along...
Day three, Hannah and I woke up feeling rested and ready to explore Paris. We hit up the continental breakfast after getting ready. The breakfast had some good selections. Pain au chocolat, croissants, different types of breads, yogurt, fresh fruit, ham, cheeses, and cereal.
Hannah and I both had coffee with sugar and foamy milk. Mmm good coffee.

Pain au chocolat, fruit and yogurt.

This yogurt in a jar was really good. It was thick and mousse-like.

They had Nutella at the breakfast bar. Love. It.

We drove around on the bus and took a little tour of Paris, and then went to the Palace of Versailles.

This is looking out at the gardens.

We went on a tour inside the palace.

Then Hannah and I walked around and toured the gardens by the water.

Snack time! They had a panini stand in the gardens and I ordered a mozzarella, tomato and basil panini. I think Hannah had chicken? Anyway, they were very good and went perfectly with Orangina! I love Orangina; it's just orange juice, sugar and carbonated water.

Panino. Miam miam!

So after visiting Versailles we drove back into Paris and had dinner at another hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I don't have any pictures because it was so bad and I was disgusted. It was probably the worst meal of the entire trip. Hannah had a soggy chicken cordon bleu, and after most everyone had finished their food, the server finally brought out my "vegetarian" plate consisting of canned peas, canned green beans, and fries. I ate the fries and that was it. I will never be hungry enough to eat canned peas. They smell like dirty feet.
Then they served us canned fruit cocktail for dessert. I almost upturned the table (like that Jersey Housewife did) in rage.
Fruit cocktail is NOTTT a dessert! ROOARRRR!
This was only our second dinner, but I was already getting upset. Hannah and I paid a lot of money to go on this trip, and it seemed like EF Tours was ripping us off. The hotels and meals were pretty disappointing.
We were supposed to go to the Eiffel Tower that night, but the tour guide forgot to reserve the tickets. So then we sat by the Seine River for a while and watched the French people drink and have picnics.

Yes, the tour guide didn't reserve tickets for us to go up into the EIFFEL TOWER. He told us we would try another day. I really wanted to like the tour guide, and I tried, but I think he was kind of a jerk sometimes. He grabbed my video camera without my permission and started filming us.
The next day we left early from our hotel, packed our suitcases on the bus, and headed to the north of France. I forgot to mention that Hannah and I had to wait an extremely long time to get on the elevator with our suitcases, so we were five minutes late to the bus and got scolded, like we were little kids.
So we weren't in the best of moods that morning. The bus ride to the north took four or five hours, I believe. Buses and the beautiful French countryside make me sleepy and I nodded off quite a bit.
We made a stop at Chartres Cathedral.

It was a beautiful cathedral. This statue was outside and I posed with it. I'm not sure if I was supposed to sit on it or not. But I did because I'm a rebel. And we had time to kill before we got back on the bus.

Then we drove some more and stopped at the castle Chambord.

But you had to pay to get into it. EF Tours didn't buy tickets for us. So basically we stopped there to take a picture. Some people chose to pay the extra money to go inside, but Hannah and I didn't.
On the way to the hotel for the night, our group stopped for dinner at a pizzeria. Hannah and I perked up and said to each other, "Oooh we're having pizza tonight!" They sat our group at some outside tables in the sweltering heat. On this night, I received my food first: a bowl of fettucini with sauteed mushrooms and cream. Nothing like a big, heavy bowl of pasta in eighty degree weather! That's what I always say. Lots and lots of heavy cream. No complaints from me though after the previous night's dinner; I ate a bit and shared it with Hannah. She needed some food because her meal was a gristly mystery meat with gravy and limp fries. We came to the conclusion that it was either pork or turkey.
After disappointing dinner number four, we headed to our new hotel in Bourges. MISTER BED! Ahhhhhh! Which was the worst hotel I've stayed in. Ever. I wasn't expecting a hotel called "Mister Bed" to be five stars or anything, but geez, this place was awful.
This is what the outside looks like. (I borrowed this picture from their website.) A quote from Hannah about the appearance of Mister Bed:
"This looks like a place you'd take a prostitute."

Right you are, Hannah! Right you are. At Mister Bed, we like to provide good atmosphere and comfortable bunk beds to all of our customers and their overnight "guests."
Q&A
Can I smoke at Mister Bed?
-Of course you can smoke at Mister Bed! Smoke em if you got em! Make the room smell so badly that future guests will want to vomit when they walk in the room!
I forgot to bring shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Do you provide any in the hotel rooms?
-No, we sure don't. Though cleaning yourself isn't mandatory at Mister Bed, we do have a universal soap dispenser in the shower for all of your needs!
Do you have towels?
-No. Why... did you want some or something?
Do you have wifi?
-No. We say we do, but we don't.
Do you have ham sandwiches in the vending machine?
-Yes, we have $5 ham sandwiches in the vending machine.
I prefer to shower in tiny bathrooms the size of a porta potty, using a removable shower head that you can't position to stay in one place. Will this be a problem?
-No! Not at all!
Do you have bunk beds?
-Boy, do we!

Have you ever been to a hotel with a bunk bed? I can say that I definitely have not. Seeing the bunk bed was a real shocker when we walked into the room. Hannah debated whether or not to sleep on the top bunk.

For safety reasons (hardly any railing), Hannah slept in the bottom bed with me. It was a long, miserable day and we both fell asleep pretty quickly. Well, after I killed the bug that was crawling across our bedspread.

What a bummer! I would have been irate at the tour company for not providing better accommodations and food options. I've been to France twice and have never eaten more delicious food - that's supposed to be one of the best things about visiting the country! I hope this trip doesn't cloud your judgment about the cuisine in Paris... there really are some fantastic foods there.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're not having a good trip so far. I recommend sneaking into any boulangerie/patisserie you can for your meals...you can get sandwiches, etc for decent prices. Cheese and wine are cheap at grocery stores, too. Also, traiteries or places marked "a emporter" have cheap to-go meals. I know you want to get your money's worth from EF (so sorry they stink!) but you might have more fun with some decent food! I hope you can salvage some good memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. Will never stay at Mister Bed if I ever travel to that part of France. The Q&A was hilarious!
ReplyDeleteand i'm jealous! not fair!!!! love these posts though. i think everything, even just the simple breakfast looks so much more delicious than our breakfasts in the states
ReplyDeleteMister Bed! Oh man, I am laughing out loud at that (but not at your expense, of course!). I'm sorry the food/accomdations were so disappointing. The whole point of going to France is to eat great food, right?
ReplyDeleteWOW! I love going through all the photos
ReplyDeleteThis really makes me want to go and visit France again!
ReplyDeleteOh no, that sounds terrible! And it's horrible that the stupid company is ruining your experience. My sister and I planned our trip ourselves and basically followed Rick Steve's guide cover to cover and we never had a bad meal or a bad experience. I say dump the guides whenever you can and do your own thing. Stick with them for transportation, since you paid for it, but don't let them ruin things further. Paris is wonderful and it'd be a shame to miss out because of the stupid travel company.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer with that EF tours!! I went with EF on summer's Holiday to earn in English in the UK, for 1 month & they ripped us off too with all the extra costs for excursions, etc.
ReplyDeleteToo bad, girls!! and too bad for the food in restaurants as well!
What do we do when we go to Paris?
ReplyDeleteWe buy feesh cheeses, good wine & charcuerie in local food shops & pic nic along the Seine!!
Mister Bed sounds like a crazy, bad, bad place!!!
This post had me laughing for all the wrong reasons - I can just imagine the canned peas that smelled like dirty feet and Mister Bed - a choice establishment. And they didn't book you tickets for the Eiffel Tower?? WTF?????
ReplyDeletei shouldn't have laughed so much as i read this post--i'm sure it wasn't funny at the time. :)
ReplyDeleteMy oh my. What a trip you have been having! I guess if anything you are saving everyone from using that travel service! It makes me sad that you are in France and eating horrible food. I guess on the plus side everything looks gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteOh God, I think I stayed in the exact same hotel on a school trip a couple of years ago... I remember my teacher telling us how nice our hotel would be and how comfortable, and when we got there it was horrible! Definetely the worst school trip ever, even though France might have been nice :) Hope you had fun anyway, at least you didn't starve, like we almost did because the food was similar to yours :-D
ReplyDeleteOh my! What a trip it has been so far. Though I'm sure it was a terrible time, it makes for a quite humorous story to bring back. (Not that your suffering is humorous!) I can't wait to read the next installment!
ReplyDeleteWow what a tremendous adventure even with the Mister Bed fiasco. Welcome to Europe!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pleasure to see your videos & pic's. I love Versailles and you've brought back some great memories. You and Hannah continue to soak in all that amazing beauty & travel safely Emily xx
Awww, I'm sorry you were disappointed with the tour service. Hopefully you'll be able to look back on the experience and laugh one day!
ReplyDeleteWell. Now I know never to go on a trip to Europe hosted by EF. They sound like an idiotic company who manages to find bad food in beautiful European countries.
ReplyDeleteBtw you and your sister look really pretty in the pictures! And your tour guide sounds like an idiot. Taking your video camera? If he placed his hands on my camera, I would've snatched it out of his paws and shrieked like a banshee!
Anyways, I'm glad you saw some beautiful places in Europe and at least had a good breakfast- pain au chocolat and fluffy yogurt? Yum! :D
Em,
ReplyDeleteDon't be mad, but I got such a huge laugh out of this post that it (almost) makes up for your suffering. Of course, the fact that you PAID for this is unbelievable. I hope your last post about France will be about the big, fat check they're sending you to make up for your misery.
I'm trying to decide who's cuter, you or Hannah. She's pretty up there.
Delurking to say that I'm sorry your trip is being a jackass, BUT I love that you wear dresses ALL THE DAMN TIME because it means that you look fresh and pretty and put together ALL THE DAMN TIME and it has inspired me to add more casual, wear-all-the-damn-time dresses into my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Sugar Plum does reality TV on her blog. Keep it up.:o)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry your hotel room smelled/looked/was bad. That can sure ruin a vacation. I don't have to stay in a luxury hotel by any means, but if I get stuck in a dump, it makes me really depressed and irritable.
LOOOVE the videos--the one with the guy talking is just too funny. Thanks for sharing all of this!
ReplyDeleteIf I really do make it to Paris this fall, you are telling me everything I shouldn't do!
ReplyDeleteMr. Bed sounds like a hostel. They shouldn't advertise as a hotel. Sounds just icky. Poor you!
And to not even have good tour tickets booked! That's just 7 kinds of wrong!
Sorry the food and hotel were so bad. That really is a shame to go to France and NOT get good food. I would be furious! Sounds like you still made the best of it and had fun. Love the Q & A section!!! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the tour...but the pictures look awesome :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree, fruit is NOT dessert! Sometimes I like fruit WITH dessert, because you can never have too much, but it certainly can't be the only dessert. I would have snuck out for a big bowl o' gelato or a crepe to make up for that meal, sorry it was so bad! I have stayed in places with bunk beds but I'm pretty sure they call themselves youth hostels, not hotels. Sounds like they're trying to fool you. Things can only get better from here, right?!
ReplyDeleteI am sooo jealous. I love Europe. Glad you had so much fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteAw, Lauren, no, I know that France has a ton of wonderful food. It was EF's fault and I'm not happy with them at all.
Virginie, those are some good tips. Thank you!
CC, you better not!
Carrian, I agree. You know what? Even their fruit tasted different there.
Alison, right. :/
Peachkins, glad you like the pictures.
Sweetomhaven, well, you should. But go on your own and not with a tour group!
Anna, that's what Hannah and I should have done. :(
Sophie, I'm so sorry they ripped you off too!
Cakelaw, I know!!
Grace, you'rrre funny.
Nutmeg Nanny, I hope so. That's my goal in these blog posts.
Helena, OH NO! I hope not! They better not ever use that hotel again. It was awful.
Sherry G, glad you like it!
Aw, thanks DT.
Kerstin, maybe so. :)
Jena, that was a good breakfast. Thank you for the compliments! Yes, I should have snatched that camera away from him.
Sue, I wish!
And, Hannah is!!
Raych, thank you! Yes, you should invest in some dresses. They're so comfy and you always look nice. :)
Lorie, I think I will!
Casaundra, no problem. :)
Rachel, I'm sure your trip will be much better than mine.
Debbie, glad you liked it.
Cara, I bet you're right about that. Maybe it was a hostel?
Oh my, this doesn't sound like fun. We had the best of meals, I hope you visited the numerous boulangerie's and ate your meals there instead. I pigged out on them :)
