We had to bring in six frosted cupcakes for the third cake decorating class. I went with Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix this time. Although, now I'm seeing that it doesn't really matter what kind of cake you bring in because we're not messing with the cake at all - we're just decorating the top. So maybe I'll make a cake from scratch for next week's class?

The instructor came by to each table and demonstrated how to make a clowns on cupcakes. Mine looked crappy compared to hers, but I think I basically know what to do. You pipe a blob of icing on to the cupcakes, using a star tip. Oh no! I don't remember which tip it was.

That's okay. I'll probably never make these ever again, anyway. Then you pipe some legs and arms on to the clown body.

Then you pipe a different colored icing to make the hands and feet.

And the buttons. I almost forgot about the buttons. And there you have your clown. I think it looks scary. Also, would you really want to eat that big blog of Crisco icing?? NO!!

Which is more frightening - clowns or Crisco?
Then we practiced making leaves with a leaf tip...

On our practice boards.

Leaves are fun to make.

We practiced making some vines, too. Don't drag the tip when you make vines!

Oh, and writing. Cursive has never been my strong point.

The instructor then showed us how to make a rose. But she only showed us (shakily) how to do it once, because she has arthritis in her hands and it hurts her to decorate. So I didn't really get it down and understand how you make roses.

I know you use this tip to pipe the base of the rose.

You pipe a blob of icing on to a little square of waxed paper on a rose nail.

You use this petal tip to form the petals of the rose.

I asked the instructor to help me, and she started this rose for me. I added some petals to it too, but what I added looked crappy. I still don't have the hang of it. I need to watch some Youtube videos.

After the roses we used the same tip to practice making ribbons. I'm not good at this, either. The problem for me was that the instructor would only demonstrate everything once, and with a crowd of people around her it was difficult for me to see.

I was still working on my roses when the teacher demonstrated to a few people on how to make a shaggy mum. I think I could figure this out on my own, though. This is a picture of Kelly's mum (a student in the class) she made. Isn't it pretty?
Hi Kelly!

This week was better than the previous weeks of class; I felt like I learned more. I think it's up to me to really get this cake decorating thing down. I need to watch some videos, study some cake decorating books, and practice.
Next week is the final week of class and we have to bring in a frosted 10-inch cake and decorate it. I don't see this going well at all.
Here's cake decorating class part one and part two if you missed it.
Wow, I got this posted before I had to leave for work. I'm proud of myself.
See ya later!

Honestly, clowns and crisco are equally scary. Because I was just as scard of the clown head as that headless crisco clown body. I'm glad she didn't make you eat the cupcake after that. lol
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who finds it funny that the cake decorating teacher has arthritis and can't demonstrate? I feel bad for her, but they could have picked someone with more dexterity to teach you. And those clowns are creepy. Did you ever see that USPS commercial with the clown? Yup, just as creepy!
ReplyDeleteI was totally thinking the same thing about that huge blob of icing on the cupcake. Seriously, I don't think I'd like a mouthful of that. Still, your clown came out really cute. Bummer about the teacher, but your rose still looks awesome. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteNice job, great rose
ReplyDeleteSounds like you learned a lot! And i agree, cupcakes are a lot better without a hugee glob of frosting on them.
ReplyDeletewow! I'm sure you had fun!

hmmm, i think you're right watching the youtube videos because that's how i learn. i would need a cake class that uses cakes too. but i do think the frosting looks likes its melting or is that just me? lol
ReplyDeleteI think your rose looks pretty good! That's something I really want to learn... leaves too. I'm glad you learned more this time, and I'm so sorry you had to make that scary clown!
ReplyDeletei really dont think your rose looks crappy. or the dumb clown. it IS creepy, but looks good for 1st time decorating. why clowns anyway? she couldnt think of anything else for you to make? and finally, im in total agreement about the crisco...yuckie!! probably a bunch a little kids at a b=day party wouldnt care but i would!! sounds kinda elitest....sorry~truth maybe you should make a giant penny-wise clown cake for the last day...that'd fix her!!xxoo
ReplyDeleteYeah those clowns are scary! Don't think I would every decorate with them either! I had the toughest time with the Wilton rose in the cake classes I took as well. I heard if you actually buy the premade Wilton icing and use for the roses it is a lot easier to work with since the consistency of making homemade CRISCO (blah) icing sometimes turns out too stiff. Can't wait to see what your final cake looks like!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on the rose!! It looks pretty!
ReplyDeleteemily--in response to your question, crisco is equally as scary as clowns. dolls would also be in this category.
ReplyDeletei think your rose looks good! don't be so hard for yourself.
you should totally make a cake with of the united states and then carve it up however YOU would want the states to look like.
ReplyDeletejust sayin.
You did better than I ever could! Be proud! :-D
ReplyDeleteCrisco is way more frightening than clowns. I think your piping looked great. Don't tell Kelly that her flower looked like ground beef, but beautifully piped!
ReplyDeleteWholewheatorbust's idea is awesome!
I'm not afraid of clowns, so I think the Crisco is the scary part.
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel any better, Alton Brown did a show on cake frosting and he said that boxed cake mixes are better than homemade cake because all of those chemicals give you a superior texture or something like that. Basically he said frosting was the important part, so don't bother going through the effort of homemade cake.
I thought your rose looked great!
I think your rose looked great. They are not easy to make. I used to teach cake decorating ti adults for my city's Adult Community Ed. I can't imagine doing it without being able to demonstrate. I also taught kindergarten for many year (my day job). I tell you, I think teaching the adults was a whole lot more difficult!
ReplyDeleteYou seem like a greta student though so I hope you are enjoying the class.
nicely done. I think the rose looks awesome. Very informative post as well ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteTamilyn... exactly what I was thinking.
Carol, hahaha maybe I will!
It's been fun following you through your cake decorating classes! This week looked like the most fun by far. You did good on the roses for sure! I am not sure I would have a steady enough hand to do it! haha
ReplyDeleteYeah the clowns are freaky. Crisco I can deal with it. I grew up in the midwest...crisco is involved in many recipes...haha. For your full cake decoration you should do your blog header...I love those little owls :)
ReplyDeleteNice photos of your class lesson.
ReplyDeleteYour rose came out good...remember, you're learning, dear Emily!
My frosting will never have shortening. It's just a no-no, in my humble opinion.
Carmen
If that's your first rose, it looks amazing! They're so hard to do! Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteI think you should write/call Wilton. This is crazy that the teacher doesn't demonstrate and that she has arthritis. The teacher I had demonstrated the rose a zillion times for us.
You really ought to report her to Wilton. I don't get how someone can take a class without demonstrating much!!
ReplyDeleteI hated making that clown, too!
ReplyDeleteMy Wilton instructor wasn't very good. The only thing she could make were the roses. Hope you get the hang of it.
~ingrid
Those clowns seriously crack me up...just wondering why Wilton hasn't updated their class since 1979 or whenever clowns were a "thing"?
ReplyDeleteHmm... I have been seriously thinking about taking a Wilton cake decorating class, but now I am a tad scared. Do you think it was your teacher just not really teaching or the lesson plan that wilton gives out not being very good?
ReplyDeleteAlso, do you think you could sub butter for the shortening?
Marie, it was definitely the teacher. I hope you have better luck than me! Butter won't work, unfortunately.
