The second cake decorating class went better than the first. I was only FIVE minutes late this time. Heh heh heh. There was traffic! I couldn't help it. I swear, I can never be on time for anything. I like to think it's very European of me to be late all of the time.
I was able to sit with my mom and my sister this time around, and got out the necessary decorating supplies: tips, piping bags, practice board, spatulas, etc. I'm loaning some of the equipment from my mom because I'm not sure if I want to invest a lot of money in cake decorating stuff right now. She put together a little kit for me and brought it into class. Thanks mommmm! I love you!
And the Pringles can. You fold the piping bag over the can and place the icing in it.

Speaking of icing!!! Look what I brought to class - big tubs of brown and yellow icing made with shortening. *shudders* I remain faithful to my beloved butter.

Here's the recipe from the Wilton decorating book if you would like it, as adapted by me.
Buttercream Decorating Icing
1 cup shortening
7 teaspoons water
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
1 tablespoon meringue powder
1 lb. confectioners' sugar, sifted
In a large mixing bowl, using a mixer on medium speed, beat shortening, water and vanilla until blended. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in sugar until just blended; increase mixer speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes or until well blended.
Before we could decorate our cake, the instructor told us to practice on a decorating board. She didn't really show us how to use any of the tips or what to make with them. We just piped some lines and stars on to it.

My cake came out of the pan successfully, thank goodness. I don't know what I would have done if it stuck.

My sister baked a cake in an old cat pan that my mom inherited. Mom says you can make a hippo cake with it too.

Mom baked a car cake. All right, mom! Vroom vroom.
I really don't know why you all read this nonsense.

Then we started decorating. Yeah... there wasn't much instruction at all. No instruction, actually. Everyone brought their baked cakes and icings to class, and then the instructor was like, okay decorate! Mom, my sister and I could have met at one of our houses and did that.

I looked at the picture that came with the cake pan and started piping stars all over the sunflower cake. Before long, I had this!

I'm kinda glad I went with the sunflower and only two colors of frosting. I didn't want to make things too complicated for myself on the first night of decorating.

This is my sister's cat-holding-a-ball cake. She didn't have time to finish it though, because the class is only two hours. Her gray icing turned purple; does anyone know why that happened?

And this is my mom's car cake. Now, I could be wrong, but, I think I remember mom baking and decorating a car cake like this when I turned sixteen. Therefore, I believe mom has decorated this cake before and has an advantage over my sister and me. Foul.

Aaaaand... that was cake decorating class part two! Did you learn anything?
Neither did I!
Next week we have to bring in baked and frosted cupcakes, and I believe we're making something with clown heads.

*shudders*

Wow! I've been really wanting to take a cake decorating class for a while now! I've pushed it back so many times... I'm glad that you're learning and enjoying yourself at the same time. Peace and blessings!
ReplyDeleteWell, at least you guys get some fun bonding time together, right? Lol :-) Your cakes did look cute. I've been wanting to take a cake decorating class and had been wondering what the Wilton classes were like. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
ReplyDeleteWOW, wonderful joB! I think your hair looks great.
ReplyDeleteWe did a pattern transfer at our first decorating class and the instructor was great! I think it's all about luck with the instructor...
ReplyDeleteLove the star tip! Wait 'til you start doing flowers on regular round cakes - I think it's so much more fun.
That tip about the Pringles can is absolute genius. Your cake also looks so pretty. The class may not have taught any methods, but it looks like you have a natural talent already.
ReplyDeleteI love that you said "I really don't know why you all read this nonsense" in the middle of your post! Funny!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about taking a Wilton cake decorating class at my local hobby lobby. I think I will pass! :) Good luck with the clown heads!
Oh dear... not the clown heads! I took a Wilton Cake Decorating class a year ago and had to use them too. Make sure your icing is stiff enough when you make the clown's body... otherwise this is what happens, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/lianator/4843_670737165294_11311210_39846276_3270118_n.jpg ...and you need to make excuses for his drunken behavior. Hahaha. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI think your hair looks gorgeous, like you spent time doing it!! If that is your undone hair, you would shudder to see mine!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty cake - you did a great job!
Did your sister use the "black" food coloring to make her gray frosting? If you look closely at the "black" food coloring you'll notice it is really a very dark purple color (and it takes a whole lot of it to make anything that resembles black!) - that would explain why your sister's gray turned out to be purple.
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up! Seems a bit weird - you make your own icing at home and your own cake at home, then you teach yourself how to deocrate it? Umm, so what does the course fee pay for? The Pringles can tip?
ReplyDeleteWow your cake looks beautiful! I don't think you need to take a class lol you're already a pro.
ReplyDeleteOMG! awesome job! i knew you didn't need any instruction!!
ReplyDeleteIs this a Wilton class? I took a Wilton class at our local Michael's store and I LOVED the instructor. I took three classes from her. She explained everything, as well as had us practice. I am not sure this sounds like a class???
ReplyDeleteBlack frosting is so hard to get. Easier if you start with chocolate frosting to start with. Wilton black turns purple, if you add a little green it will help offset the purple.
Your sunflower is so cute!!
I am a Wilton Method Instructor in Indiana and I have to say your instructor is not doing their job and you should report her to Wilton. There are lots of things that she should have told you and explained and showed you during your class. Come to Indiana and take my classes!
ReplyDeleteYour cake turned out cute! I don't know if you have Sur la Table stores near you, but they offer decorating classes too. I can't personally vouch for them, but they might be worth checking out if you're unhappy with the Wilton class!
ReplyDeleteNice post. Your final question and answer made me chuckle!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a cake decorator. But, I enjoy looking at nice work.
Your cake came out beautiful.
Carmen
That was a super funny post! :0) Your hair looked great and so did all of the cakes. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteThat was a super funny post! :0) Your hair looked great and so did all of the cakes. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteAwesome job! I've always wanted to take a cake decorating class!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe your instructor didn't give you any techniques for frosting the cake or using the different piping tips. I have taken all 4 Wilton Courses and had the same instructor for each of them. She would always demonstrate everything before we started and even walk around the room to answer questions as we decorated our cakes. We always had to bring round cakes to class, never got to use a decorative cake pan though. I really like the way your sunflower turned out. Can't wait to see how your 3rd class goes!
ReplyDelete'sudders' lol! your posts are great and so funny! maybe you should teach the class?!
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny...your posts always make me laugh! Wow...you girls did a great job...your stars look great...and I wish I could not "fix" my hair and have it look like yours!!! Thanks for sharing and for making me laugh!!
ReplyDeleteCake decorating classes are on my 101 list, but now you have me a little afraid! Your cake looks great though and family time is always fun, even if you could do it at home.
ReplyDeleteI think it all sounds fun! :-D
ReplyDeleteAs I read the post I kept thinking "Hooray! No clowns". Then I got to the end. Based on what you did last night, I'm sure the clown experience won't be too bad ;). Your cakes look terrific! I wish I had the patience (and fine motor skills) for that type of cake decorating.
ReplyDeletethat pringles can tip is SO useful! i love free hints. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the way your cake turned out. That's awful that your instructor didn't demonstrate the technique. In all of the Wilton classes I have taken the instructor always demos stuff first and then we practice and decorate our cakes. The clowns really aren't that bad. The cakes can turn out pretty cute.
ReplyDeleteAmazing Sunflower cake, it is so you! Full of sunny sunshine! I hate clowns they are evil!
ReplyDeleteYour cake is pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe clown is scary.
Looks like I need to go buy a can of Pringles to make my cake decorating easier. Does it matter what flavor?;o)
What an adorable cake! It's a shame that the teacher didn't teach you more. I hear you can take little classes at the CIA that I'm thinking about taking. Although I'm scared that I will suck too much...haha.
ReplyDeleteThis brought me back to the time when I was 6 and obsessed with Holly Hobbie (the REAL one who wore sunbonnets and calico and not the weird modern one). She bought a special cake pan and decorating kit from Wilton. It came with a book explaining how to make the elaborate cake. She didn't need no stinking class! It was a beautiful cake and she never made it again. I almost felt bad she spent the money to make it the first time. Oh well, I'll always remember the cake, so she didthe right thing.
ReplyDeleteI would probably go crazy making all those stars. I have no patience for cake decorating!
And you are paying for this class? I'm thinking the word 'class' means you learn something-like from the instructor you are paying. Sad face :(
ReplyDeleteI have that exact same sheet with the stars and lines at home from my cake class haha! Your flower turned out cute! Are you going to learn how to make roses? That was the best part- the rest I felt I could have figured out on my own!
ReplyDeleteI really thought the second class would be better than the first. I guess I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteWe used to practice piping with instant mashed potatoes, which is the only thing they're good for.
Thanks for sharing this lovely post, Emily!! Your decorated cake looks beautiful,...really arty!
ReplyDeleteAww, sorry you've been disappointed - hopefully the class will get better as you start doing more advanced things. I do like the pringles can tip :)
ReplyDeleteI wish my hair looked as good as yours when it was "messed up". You look great. And thanks for the pringles tip. Will definitely use it the next time I decorate.
ReplyDeleteWell bummer you're not really having too much fun in the class, but just look at it as getting to spend time with your mom and sister!!
ReplyDeleteNo instruction at all sounds crazy. What did you pay for, especially if you have to buy your own clowns?
ReplyDeleteGREAT job on the cake(s). Really. That's a lot of piping.
Thanks everyone! Thanks for the tips and advice! Thanks also for making me feel better about my hair. Haaahaa.
ReplyDeleteKathy, that's true!
Lisa, aww.
Dolli, :)
Julie, yes, I figured that out. Next time I make chocolate!
Rhiana, yes, I think she did. :/
Lisa, I would love to! Maybe she's going to teach the stuff to us in our next class?
Ashley, ha! I'm terrible!
Anna, I definitely don't have the patience! Which is why it's pointless for me to take the class. I guess I just wanted some basic decorating help.
Lorie, I think the pizza flavored ones help your cake decorating the best! ;)
Sue, I wish our icing recipe called for mashed potatoes. That would make it taste so much better.
Nutmeg Nanny, take it!
Rachel, I love your stories...
Tamilyn, indeed I am.
Jenn, think we'll learn roses next week? MAYBE. Ha.

ReplyDeleteA professional gingerbread house baker once told me to use cocoa powder to tint my grey or black frosting. I've never tried it so I don't know if that means along with the food coloring or not, but it may be worth experimenting.
