Just Call Me Suzy Homemaker

Suzy9

I bought flowers for the first time the other day. Purple pansies (!) that I planted in a pot from Marshalls and set on our front stoop.

I was only motivated to do this because our neighbor set out a pot of gerber daisies the other day and I didn't want to be outdone.

I also purchased a raspberry bush and planted it. It was a spontaneous purchase fueled by my desire to eat fresh raspberries off the bush during summertime. I greatly underestimated how big of a pot you would need to plant it in. Or maybe you can only plant raspberry bushes in the ground? How would I know?

Suzy10

I might have to let my mom adopt the bush and plant it in her yard. I'll still come visit it though.

What else have I been up to, you ask? Well, I've been making batches of homemade kefir. Kefir is thick-yogurty milk drink. It tastes like a smoothie made with buttermilk, and it's really good for you. I didn't care for it at first, but I've grown to like it.

Suzy4

I made mine with coconut milk, but you could also use cow's milk, soy, almond, rice or goat milk. I recommend cow or goat milk, because the coconut was a little watery.

Suzy5

I bought the kefir starter grains on Amazon... they were pretty cheap. You place the grains in an clean, empty bottle or jar, pour in your milk of choice, and allow the mixture to sit for 24-48 hours (at room temperature). The longer you let it sit, the more bite it will have.

Yeah, I know... this seems wrong. It's okay, just don't think about it.

Suzy6

After that I strained the kefir grains out and set them aside for another future batch. Then I blended my homemade kefir with strawberries and bananas.

I chilled it down before drinking it, and you know what? It was good! And I didn't get violently ill! I call that a success.

You know what else? I prefer store bought-Lifeway kefir. It tastes better and I don't have to go through the hassel of making it.

Oh well, it was a fun experiment. Maybe I'll try making my own wine next. Teehee. That could be some reallll good times.

I've been using my bread machine... not a lot, but some. I have to freeze bread because I can never get through a loaf before it gets old.

It's really easy to use. You basically just throw all of the ingredients in the machine and push some buttons. You have to put the liquids in the bottom first before adding the dry ingredients.

Then, a couple of hours later you have bread!

I cooled this loaf upside down on a wire rack - that's why it has lines on top. I think I read once that you're supposed to cool bread upside down.
Or was that resting a turkey? Hmmm.

This is a buttermilk cinnamon bread recipe I made up. It made the whole house smell good while it was baking. I made French toast with it one night after work for dinner.

Breakfast for dinner is the best. Who wants to go to Denny's with me right now? IHOP?

I'll buy.

You can get those sausage patties and hash browns you've been craving.

Love,

  1. I have a foolproof method for countertop coconut milk kefir on my site. You dont have to boil, measure, strain...just dump 3 things in a jar and wait 18-24 hrs. Life is beautiful. No stress :)

  2. Such purrrty flowers :) We keep getting snow up here so there can be no outdoor flowers quite yet!

Breakfast for dinner will never get old. And I used to LOVE Denny's when I was younger - moons over my hammy! Nowadays I love Cracker Barrel!

I've never made kefir, but I did make homemade yogurt last year a few times in my crockpot - SO good and easy!

  4. Well, "suzy"...this is lookin' good. Way to not be outdone by the neighbor!
I also freeze my bread, because it keeps fresh longer. It feels like a fresh piece everytime that way!
AND...I love breakfast for dinner...now I'm thinking pancakes for dinner tonight...mmmm

    Thanks for your fun posts!

  5. IHOP please! I've been craving the stuffed french toast like crazy! Do you have a good recipe for it? The only one I have is the one where you use cream cheese and sandwich the bread together and then dip it in batter. Definitely not as good! :/

  6. I've heard so many good things about kefir lately that I really am going to have to try it. Along with coconut milk. I'm typically an almond milk girl all the way, but I think it's time I expanded my horizons :P

Your bread looks fab! Love that flavor combo!

  7. I would totally go to Denny's with you RIGHT NOW. Did you know you can get thornless raspberry plants? They are awesome! I had those and a bunch of blueberry bushes (even better!) at my last house, I can't believe I moved and left them behind. Now I'm sad and I'll have to go make some bread to feel better. ;)

  8. Hi I think you meant to say "pansies" instead of petunias. Either way they are really pretty.

  9. I wish I could plant some flowers right now, but unfortunately, we have snow coming down outside instead. The bread looks delicious!

  10. Hi Emily,
Gotta tell you...those flowers are not petunias...they are panseys. Panseys have "faces" , adorable multi-colored faces and are a great flower sold in early spring. They love coolish nights/weathers. They will begin to fade away as the weather warms.Petunias have a wide trumpet shaped blossoms and probaby won't be available for sale until late May, when the danger of an evening frost is over. Petunias will grow all summer and just need to be pinched back every couple of weeks and you will need to pinch off the spent bloooms for more to appear.
The raspberry bush would love a very sunny spot and will take a couple of years to get mature enough for blossoms/fruit. If planted in the ground, it will send out runners that will sprout into other plants over time.

  11. Sorry to tell you Em those are pansies, not petunias. But the good thing is pansies like cooler weather.

  12. Thanks everyone!

I love that the people who usually don't comment are commenting to call me out on my mistake. :)

    Thank you!

I actually do know the difference... I just wasn't thinking.

Anon, thanks for the advice! I'll probably give the bush to my mom to plant.

  13. It will be at least another two months before I can start my spring planting. I always end up buying plants that just don't work for me. I keep trying for tomatoes. You can't get a good tomato harvest unless you plant LOTS of plants. Two or three plants will not give you any decent number of tomatoes at one time. I've been tempted to buy strawberry bushes, but I suspect one bush will be like one tomato plant.

  14. Hey Suzy Homemaker, I just pulled my bread maker out of the closet 2 days ago! Since grocery prices are going up, I plan to make a couple of small whole wheat loaves each week. It's really no effort at all with the bread maker. No more expensive Kashi cereal for us. We'll be doing toast for breakfast.

  15. Haven't bought any spring flowers just yet since we are having a cold spell this weekend. Maybe next week. The bread looks good. I am such a bread addict!

  16. Love that you make homemade kefir! The first time I tried it I was in an Iranian restaurant in Munich. I hated it. The Arabic gentleman we were with laughed and said "American's never like this"...haha.

I also really like your bread machine. If I had the counter space I would be all over it. Sadly I do not.

And I checked out your updated link love...It totally made my day to see my little blog listed on there! Thank you!

  18. I've never had kefir, but I've seen it at Whole Foods several times...I eat a ton of yogurt, so I bet I'd enjoy it. I'm so jealous that you have that outdoor area for flowers (and I bet food photography too!) Living in a high rise sucks!

  20. Looking good and healthy..just what you need before that trip to Ihop. :) One difference between you and me is that I wouldn't know a pansy from a petunia, much less how to keep them alive...

Do you do awards? If so, I have one for you. If not, just know I gave you a shout out...love your blog.

  23. You want to hear about a mistake I made this weekend? Jeremy wanted to make ham & beans and he sent me to the store to buy the ingredients. I came home with beans and pork steaks. NOT HAM. I wasn't thinking clearly. I had to run out the next day and buy ham. I felt so stupid.
