Yup, more bread. It's that kind of week.
I don't mind, do you? I could eat bread just about every day.
Bread is good comfort food if you're stressed or worried about something in your life. Say, stressing out and helping your friend make 400 peanut butter balls for her wedding, or, say, dealing with a dash of food poisoning from eating sushi (don't eat sushi from Springfield, MO), or, maybe a dentist appointment.
I'd been nervous all week about a dentist appointment I had this morning. It was the first appointment I've had in... maybe five years? Six?
I know, I'm horrible. But I don't have dental insurance. Can you blame me?
I've been having pain in the upper right side of my jaw for the past couple of months, so I figured I had better schedule a dentist appointment.
I was a nervous wreck this morning; I was dreading the bad news I would get from the dentist. All of the cavities I have, all of the root canals I need, the gingivitis in my gums... But mostly I was dreading the thousands of dollars I would have to pay to get all of this fixed.
I knew, I just knew I was going to have a million cavities from all of the sugar I eat. I bake something sweet almost every day!
So after taking about twenty x-rays of my teeth, and the dentist studying them for a couple of minutes, she said, "You don't have any cavities, your gums look good, and I don't see any problems."
Whaaat?! I was completely shocked. I can't believe how lucky I am. When does that ever happen at the dentist? I've been smiling and in a good mood all day.
Of course the $109 I paid to find out my teeth are perfectly fine hurt a bit, but at least I have peace of mind now. AND, I don't have to go to the dentist for another six years.
As for my jaw, I have no idea why I've been having pain. The dentist said I could be grinding my teeth while I sleep, but I don't think that's it. I'm pretty sure I've never done that. But then again, how would I know if I'm sleeping?
I chew gum a lot, so I'm thinking maybe that's it. No more gum for me.
I better stock up on Tic-Tacs. Or maybe not.
At least I can continue baking sweet, sweet, sugary desserts every day.
Let's celebrate with a Pumpkin French Toast Breakfast Braid!

This bread was so incredibly delicious. It's a sweet egg bread flavored with pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and maple syrup. It's topped with a glaze made from powdered sugar, maple syrup and butter. It tastes like a pumpkin cinnamon roll to me.

This may have been my favorite bread I've ever baked. I'm going to make it again and again. It's another easy bread recipe - it's not difficult at all. The maple syrup, butter and spices make it taste like French toast. It's perfect for serving at breakfast. I actually made French toast out of it and it was aaamazing.
I hope you have a lovely weekend! Anybody else walking down the aisle in a bright orange bridesmaid dress? No?
And yes, there will be pictures.

Printable Recipe
Dough
1/2 cup warm milk (100°-110°F)
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
3/4 cup canned pumpkin puree
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 large eggs, divided use
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon salt
6 cups unbleached bread flour
Glaze
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
To make the bread dough, in the bowl of a stand mixer, using the dough hook on medium speed, mix together milk, maple syrup and yeast until combined; allow to sit for 10 minutes or until bubbles form. Add pumpkin, brown sugar, 2 eggs, butter, pumpkin pie spice and salt to yeast mixture and mix until well combined. Mix in bread flour until combined; continue to mix for an additional 5-8 minutes or until dough is smooth and elastic. Form into a ball and place in a large, greased mixing bowl; lightly cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in bulk.
Punch dough down, and divide in half. Divide one half of dough into 3 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, shape each portion into a 12-inch rope. Place ropes on a greased baking sheet; shape into a braid and pinch edges to seal. Repeat process with remaining dough. Lightly cover braids with plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm area for 30 minutes or until doubled in bulk.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Whisk remaining 1 egg together with a tablespoon of water; evenly brush on surface of braids. Bake 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and internal temperature of bread reaches 180 degrees F. Cool at least 30 minutes before spreading glaze on bread.
To make the glaze, in a medium bowl, whisk together butter, confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup and vanilla until well combined and smooth. Drizzle and spread glaze on top of bread.

This bread looks perfect to me! Same thing for me (for the dentist) it's been 4 years since my last visit... Maybe I should go!
ReplyDeleteLooks so good! I just made pumpkin, chocolate chip and pecan cookies last night. Looks like pumpkin is good any time of the year!
ReplyDeleteThis bread has me craving fall :). I love all things pumpkin, and this looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI have to go to the dentist next week - eek!
ReplyDeleteLovin' the braid :)
beautiful, mouth-watering, delicious, insanely sweet and I GOT TO HAVE IT!
ReplyDeleteTastes like a pumpkin cinnamon roll?!? Count me in! Glad your teeth are healthy--the dentist is sooo not fun.
ReplyDeleteI see you are making good use of your pumpkin stores. I just love all things pumpkin.
ReplyDeletethat looks so delicious!
ReplyDeleteUm, hello? Pumpkin, bread, and maple syrup all wrapped up in one? YES please!!
ReplyDeleteI think I told you this the last time you mentioned your bridemaids dress but I got to wear one a lovely tangerine dress one time too. Oh the pain! Good luck, it's only a few hours.
Okay, I've never left these words in a comment on a food blog before, but...FLOSS! Don't ever skip a day and you'll be so far ahead of those of us who weren't smart enough to do that before 30.
ReplyDeletePLUS send some flowers to your parents, because their genes are what gave you such good luck.
What a fantastic bread recipe. I can't wait to see those orange dress pictures. Have fun!
Emily, this bread is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your dental success! My last trip to the dentist yielded quite a few cavitities. Though the dentist told me it wasn't because of anything I did, it was because of the shape of my teeth. I'm not sure if that's better or worse..
Have fun in the wedding!
Yay, no cavities!! Congrats! ;) This recipe looks insanely delicious. I want to make it, but I'm a bit concerned that I'd eat all of it.
ReplyDeletewhat a gorgeous bread! I wish I could squeeze some in before Passover :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the dentist since starting med school and now it's been so long that I'm absolutely DREADING going. But I don't FEEL like I have any cavities....female intuition. That's what I'm gonna go off of.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that I still have about 16 cans of pumpkin sitting here? Making this!
This looks so yummy, I wish I could eat bread! I had all my wisdom teeth out on Monday (trust me, I know about the nervous wreck part). It's Day 5 and still can't eat solids, my jaw barely opens lol. I don't think I'll ever take eating delicious pastries for granted again!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got a clean bill of health for your teeth by the way, that must have been a huge relief! And you're right, it could very well just be chewing gum all the time. :P That's actually why I don't chew gum anymore. Good luck with your jaw!
Oh! I love it! I know now where I'm going to use my pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of this bread! So bright and orange :)
ReplyDeleteThe bread looks so good! The color seems perfects, and spicy hum! I go to the dentist once a year, the kind of "things you have to do once a year because you have to" thing, but you now you're ok for a good time!
ReplyDeletecan't wait for the pictures!! :)
ReplyDeleteand man, this bread looks awesome! good thing I still have some pumpkin in my cupboard!
Haha- the exact same thing happened to me with the dentist back in January. It had been an embarrassingly long time, probably more like 6-7 years, and they checked everything out and told me to "come back in a year or two."
ReplyDeletehuh?
okay!
Cheers :)

I'm jealous of your dentist story ;) I went about 5 years without going too, but finally went when I got insurance. Previously, I'd never had a cavity, but my dentist found 6! Long story short, I've stopped chewing gum because I think that was the problem. I used to love chewing a big ol' piece of bubblicious or bazooka joe bubble gum as ridiculous as that is for an adult.
ReplyDeletethat bread...oh.my.gawd!!!!!! looks awesome!!
ReplyDeleteand congrats on the dental news!!
I did almost the same thing with the dentist - and I even had dental insurance. I just had making appointments and going. I'm glad it all worked out for you.
ReplyDeleteThis bread looks incredible.
So glad everything was ok at the dentist! And that you're feeling better, food poisoning is just the worst :(
ReplyDeleteAnd this bread, I'm in love - pumpkin bread with maple syrup just sounds amazing!
Ummmm amazing!
ReplyDeleteSo, I've never attempted a bread recipe before because I'm intimidated by them (and I also don't like the idea of putting flour on my counters and then rolling dough around in it). But you've persuaded me - I MUST make this!
ReplyDeletewhat a fabulous bread, love the french toast idea!! i chew alot of gum too... i figure its better than cigarettes :)
ReplyDeleteBright orange bridesmaid dress sounds awesome! Enjoy :-)
ReplyDeletethank you for successfully combining three of my favorite things: pumpkin, french toast, homemade bread.
ReplyDeleteit looks so pillowy. love it!
I love doughy bread and this looks like it satisfies my requirement completely. YUM!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I'd love a slice of this right about now! And later too! Just to add my two cents about the dentist...my husband thought he was having some severe dental pain, even got a wisdom tooth pulled just to have the pain come right back. Turns out he had a sinus infection that cleared right up with a round of antibiotics. Just a thought :)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteThis bread looks delicious! Have to give it a try....
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that I ground my teeth until I got married. My husband actually thought there was a mouse in the house... um. No, just me... grinding away apparently. Now I have jaw pain and such, but didn't know it till I got married.
ummm are you kidding me? i need this bread right now! it looks so beautiful and i can just taste the flavors combining perfectly. i think you should start an at-home bakery so you can ship me all of your masterpieces! i'll pay you lots so you can go to the dentist whenever you want to (not that you want to)!
ReplyDeleteI want this in my belly now!
ReplyDeletethis bread is gorgeous! It looks so moist, dense and flavorful! And hello pumpkin! I love pumpkin and can eat it all year long! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe...it looks like heaven to me!
ReplyDeleteI love anything pumpkin, so this right up my alley! Gotta try it, it looks wonderful!
