What's In My Kitchen - Equipment

S3

Do your cabinets look like this too?

Yeah, I kind of hate it. This is just one of the many stuffed cabinets in our kitchen. Lord help me if I ever need to use the tart pan on the top shelf.

This is the cabinet where I store most of my pans: muffin, cake, 13x9, 8x8, loaf, bundt, pie and springform. I want a mini loaf pan, too... but I'll wait until someday when I have a bigger kitchen.

For this post, I thought I would show you all of the equipment in my kitchen I use for baking and making desserts. Most of the stuff I store on a huge wire rack that I bought from Target a few months ago. I love Target. I go there all of the time, even when I don't need anything. The next thing I know I'm leaving the store with a bag full of coffee creamer, a dress, some flip flops, and edamame.

Here's the beautiful deep fryer, once again. She's a beauty.
Is it bad that I used it three times this past week? It's just a little toooo easy to fry things now. Random hushpuppy craving? Heyyy, just pull out the deep fryer and make some.

S5

You've seen this before. It's my Kitchen-Aid stand mixer. It's great for yeast breads, meringue, marshmallows, and when you need large batches of cookies or cakes. It's great for everything, actually...

S4

But you know what? I use my hand mixer more than my stand mixer. Am I the only one? It seems easier to use and clean.

Sweet9

I'd love to own a Vitamix someday, but, this blender isn't bad at all. I've never really had a problem with it. I guess I don't really use this for baking that much. I do make soups and smoothies in it, though.

S1

I use a food processor whenever I want to chop up nuts or puree fruit. I've never tried making pie dough in it. Has anyone else tried that?

S2

Ice cream maker! I've only used this once since I got it a few months ago. It's about to get used A LOT very, very soon. I would like to come up with some sorbet and non-dairy ice cream recipes.

S6

I bought this coffee grinder with intentions of grinding my own coffee beans. But I really needed a spice grinder more than a coffee grinder. I've been grinding up spices up in it. Also nuts and coconut. Is that okay? I hope so because it works like a charm. It makes nut butter better than a food processor!

S7

Here we have my sieves and rolling pins. Look how big that sifter is! It's for big, muscle-y women. Like myself. Mom bought me that for Christmas after I complained about my old sifter (I like the ones with the crank, not the ones that you squeeze).

S10

Cookie sheets and cutting board. I use this one specific cutting board for baking, that way I don't mix in garlic and onion flavors in my baked goods (I use separate knives, too). My cookie sheets aren't very fancy. In fact, they're pretty gnarly. I can't seem to ever get them sparkling clean. I should probably upgrade and get some nicer ones. Question: does cooking spray mess up your pans?

S11

Here are some different utensils I use: pastry brush, apple corer/slicer, spatula, cookie scoop, candy thermometer, microplane, biscuit cutter, Y peeler, and bench scraper. I can't tell you how much I love my cookie scoop. It's changed my life. I used to use just teaspoons to scoop my cookie dough and muffin batter. I love my microplane, too; I use it all of the time. Don't you think Y peelers are so much better than regular peelers? I do.

S12

And finally, here we have glass mixing bowls, a whisk, a wooden spoon, measuring cups, measuring spoon, a knife, and a spatula. These are actually Eric's glass mixing bowls. Sadly, only one exists now. I broke one of them yesterday while making Swiss meringue buttercream; I used it on top of a pan of simmering water, and it cracked. It scared me.
It scared Eric that he might find some glass in his frosted cupcake.

(I'm only kidding. I know someone is going to take that seriously)

Sweet8

I guess that's it. Fascinating stuff, no? :)

What's in your kitchen? Is there something you own that you couldn't possibly live without?

  1. Actually there is a lot of my cabinets that are like yours... I have too much baking and cooking stuffs. Way too much actually! We will have Target stores in Quebec, I'll see wat you mean!

  2. Sounds like you need a metal bowl for double boiling or get a glass pot set that is made to use on the stove for a double boiler (I know my mother had one). Glass bowls should never be used on a stovetop unless they are made for it (antique corningware). You're lucky it only cracked.

  3. Cooking spray totally messed up my cookie sheets too. I got new ones for Christmas and if I'm worried about something sticking I just use parchment now. They're too pretty and shiny to mess up!

  4. I love peeking into other people's cupboards. Yours look pretty neat and it looks like you have a lot of room. For living in an apartment in the middle of the city, my kitchen is pretty big and I still feel like I don't have enough space.

  5. i love all your goodies and seeing what you have...

have been toying w/ the idea of a kitchen aid stand mixer for yrs...not sure i need one and it's extremely thought provoking that you use your handmixer more. ok...maybe that's all i need too since you're Baker Extrodinaire and if you dont need the big K.A. than maybe i dont either.

  6. I have that same coffee grinder, and have only ever used it to grind coffee beans, but now I'm itching to try making nut butters.

And it is my dream in life to someday own a KitchenAid. Oh, yes, it will happen.

Also, I've made your chocolate chip cookies twice in the past week for two separate parties. They are always devoured and raved over, so thanks for the recipe!

  7. Haha, yes my cabinets look like that.
I really want a mixer like yours but I always wonder if I'll end up using my hand mixer so I keep putting it off.
I do make some pie dough in my processor! It works better for me, but you have to be really careful not to blend too much.
I totally can't live without my immersion blender. That thing makes life so much easier :D

  8. Currently in my kitchen the one thing I own that I couldn't possibly live without are all the cabinet latches to keep the baby out of everything, I got them yesterday! He likes to go into the kitchen and throw all my pans around!

  9. Super Jealous of your Kitchen Aid, also I tried to use my magic bullet for a food processor but it turns everything into paste! Darn that Magic bullet for doing it's job!

  10. My kitchen is even smaller than yours and yet I still insist on every kind of pan there is, so I know exactly what you mean when you say that sometimes getting just the right pan is waay more trouble than it should be. Some day. But really I just wanted to tell you how jealous I am that you can get your coffee grinder to work with nuts! I tried that with mine and it just got clogged, overheated, and then it died. Sigh.

  11. I use my food processor to start the pie dough, but finish mixing it by hand. Since I keep butter in the freezer, it's nice to be able to use it frozen. Pulse the flour mixture (or one that you've already mixed cream cheese into) with the butter until the pieces are the right size. Add the minimum liquid and pulse a few times, then dump out the contents into a big bowl or on a countertop and use a spatula to finish mixing, adding more water if you need to. Works every time!

  12. I use my food processor for lots of stuff. A few years ago for Christmas I received a copy of Bittman's "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian" and he's a big proponent of the food processor, which changed my thinking about it. I use it for salsa, pizza and other doughs, sometimes mashed potatoes (I like 'em gluey), batters, bean burger mixtures, and anything else that needs to be chopped up and mixed together. It works great!

As for baking sheets, mine are totally gross looking, no matter how much I scrub. And I usually line them with foil when I cook (or a silpat if I bake), so I have no idea how they got so gnarly. I replaced them a while back, and they stayed pretty and shiny for a little while, but now they're back to their usual state. Oh well!

  13. I adore my immersion blender, and couldn't imagine my kitchen bereft of it. Being able to blend soups right in the pot is such a great convenience!

  14. You and I have so much of the same equipment, it's a little insane.

I've never thought to make nut butter in my coffee grinder...but it sounds ideal.

  15. Oh, my goodness girl! You have GOT to make pie dough in your food processor! Easiest thing e-vah!! You'll never go back..... :)

  17. i'm so nosy i love seeing what others have!:) it looks like you have a well stocked kitchen. i need so much for mine, an ice cream maker, vitamix, kitchen aid...i don't even have food processor!!! lame. honeslty, though i like doing things, like making pie dough by hand...just seems more enjoyable/therapuetic to me. have a great thursday! :)

  18. I love seeing these kinds of posts! Only my cupboards and shelves are so disorganized that I don't want any evidence of it on the internet.

I only have hand mixers, but they do the job well so I don't feel that I really need a kitchen aid, although I'd like one. I had two hand mixers that came with different attachments so I won't have to stop and wash if I'm whisking multiple stuff.

I used to make pie dough in the food processor, and I still do if it's a large batch. But I'm lazy and don't like cleaning more than I have to so I make it by hand.

I never thought about using the coffee grinder to make nut butters.

I will stop now, and read your chocolate peanut butter post.

  19. I have about as much stuff as you do, and hardly any of it fits in my kitchen. Most of it is in the hall closet, which is my pantry, and the two spare bedrooms.

I absolutely love my stand mixer. I use it mostly to make Czech christmas cookies, but I will use it to make other stuff too.

As for the cookie sheets, I usually just use parchment paper. It keeps them looking nicer I think.

  20. Great! I wish I had an ice cream maker and a ktchen aid, and a real big great kitchen full of cabinets!

  21. I use my hand mixer more that the big one too it s easier to clean :)

  22. Do you have a Silpat?

I used to just line my cookie sheet with parchment before baking and thought that was easy enough, but my boyfriend bought me a Silpat a few months ago and that is even easier to use! It's simple to clean and I just store it on the cookie sheet I use most often. I love it!

  23. You literally have everything!! And I don't think there is ever enough space!

  24. Oh my gosh! I think my cabinets all look worse than that. I have to keep my bundt pans and springform pans in my couch table in the living room. Ha! I think this was actually kind of fun. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK, this makes me feel so much better. Never use my KitchenAid mixer. Always opt for my hand mixer instead. It gets the job done every time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You cabinets look good compared to mine!!!

Pam/cooking spray really does mess up pans. I refuse to use it anymore. My boyfriend used pam on my brand new grill pan and now its got funky spots. GRRR.

  27. that reminds me- my hubs broke my blender and I need a new one! Love seeing your stock of goodies. Mine looks about the same but I need to add more gadgets to my collection it seems!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Your cabinets look pretty neat, but I can totally relate with shopping at Target and the cabinets being totally jam-packed with cook/bakeware and gadgets. I also love my hand mixer for most purposes, I just find it easier. I can't say there is just one thing I need, I love my whole kitchen (except, I'd like pantry-cabinets).

  29. Thanks for this post exploring some kitchen equipment. I think a number of people probably have kitchen cabinets that are somewhat stuffed.

  30. girl, my cabinet is WAY messier than that! at least you can close yours LOL

  31. This post made me happy--I'm not the only one with an abundance of kitchen stuff :) I love my KA mixer...don't even have a handheld (though sometimes I wish I did)...I seriously use it at least 4 times a week...and to think my husband wasn't sure if we needed it, ha!

I also loooove my food processor (and have made dough successfully in it many times!) as well as my ice cream maker--can't get enough of that lately!

  32. I love my cutting boards that are the thin kind you can pick up and dump into the bowl. They are great, and easy to clean. And my Kiwi knife. You can only find them in Asian Food Markets, but they are the best sharpest knife ever! I love mine.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I had to laugh because I thought I was the only one out there that uses a hand mixer way more than my Kitchen Aid stand mixer! I don't know what it is but I just love my hand held mixer!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks everyone!

Olivia, I had used that one before. The pan was barely simmering! Anyway, I've learned my lesson. :)

ABK, I didn't think about using parchment.

Averie, it's nice to look at...

Penelope, yaaaay! That makes me so happy!

Heidi, I have one of those too! I forgot about that.

    S.V., That crazy baby!

Casey, I want one of those! I have the Slapchop already. :)

Anna, I'm guessing you're not supposed to use nuts. Eek.

Tom, I'll have to try it! It sounds easy. Have you ever tried grating your butter for pie dough or biscuits?

Misty, I think I'm going to invest in some Silpats. Good idea!

Jenna, I completely agree! I love making pie dough by hand.

Shannon, I don't. I need some! I wonder how much they are on Amazon.

Angela, what do you use? Butter?

Ronda, wow, thanks for the tip. I'm going to look for one next time I'm at our Asian market.

  35. I love posts like this!

Now that I am used to a juicer, vita-mix and kitchen aid, I could not live without them.

  36. Oh I'm missing a hand mixer - need to add that on my list, as well as meat mncer. Love your collection!

  37. You MUST try your food processor to make pie crust. After I finally broke down and purchased one for Christmas, I found out how easy and time-saving it is to do it that way. I would never go back to cutting ingredients together by hand, and I'm 40 years old with a whole lotta pie-baking history. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh and my other time-saving trick now is to use Reynolds Release foil. I should be their spokesperson, I really love this product and wholeheartedly recommend. I use it for everything that goes into the oven. Food comes off with no problem and you don't have to wash the pans or cookie sheets!
