As you can see, I spent a lot of time at Chelsea Market while I was in New York. My hotel was right across the street, so I ended up killing a lot of time there by shopping and eating. Usually I would’ve tried to get out and see the city more, but unfortunately I didn’t have a lot of time, and I was alone. I played it safe and stayed in Chelsea.
Except when I first arrived. I had my driver immediately drop me off at Momofuku Milk Bar (in the East Village) instead of my hotel. Except it wasn’t the original Momofuku Milk Bar; it was some kind of smaller outlet store. Their menu was the same as the larger Momofuku, though. Maybe the larger Momofuku doesn’t exist anymore?
I had a few things on my list to try: all of the cookies, crack pie, candy bar pie, and cereal milk soft serve.
I ordered two of each kind of cookie. I’ve been reading Christina Tosi’s Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook and had to know what the texture was like with her cookies. She uses glucose and milk powder in her cookies to make them chewy, crispy and soft in the middle.
Cornflake-Chocolate Chip Marshmallow Cookie. I liked this one. First off, I should probably tell you that I liked all of the cookies. Some more than others. The corny flavor and crispy texture makes this cookie unique.
Peanut Butter Cookie. These are soft, chewy, salty and have a strong brown sugar flavor. I think she must use molasses.
Corn Cookie. This was probably my favorite cookie, and it was Eric’s, too (I brought him some samples). This cookie isn’t crazy-different in texture – it’s like a soft sugar cookie – but I liked it because it was so simple, and the corn flavor was great. She uses corn flour and corn powder in these. It makes them taste like Cap’n Crunch.
This is the Blueberry & Cream Cookie. These are just cool; they taste like a chewy blueberry muffin. They’re softer than the other cookies, and they have dried blueberries and white chocolate in them.
The famous Compost Cookie. Made with chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, oats, potato chips, pretzels, and coffee. It was okay. I preferred the compost cookie my mom and I had a few years back.
This is the Candy Bar Pie. It has a chocolate cookie crust topped with a thick caramel, a peanut butter nougat (I think), chocolate ganache, and a pretzel. Overall, pretty delicious. This pie is rich, though – wow! It was a little salty for me, and the caramel texture was more gelatinous than I thought it would be.. but I’m being nitpicky. I guess I’m just partial to the next pie.
Crack Pie! This was my favorite Momofuku dessert. It tastes like a cross between gooey butter cake and chess pie. Buttery-brown sugar-oat crust topped with buttery sweet goo and powdered sugar. Mmm. I will be making this pie from the cookbook very soon!
All of those cookies and pie were a good appetizer, but I was more than ready for dinner. Wink.
New York Pizza!
I heard about Motorino from Lorie’s blog, and a few other blogs I read. I ordered the brussel sprout & smoked pancetta pizza with fior di latte, garlic and pecorino. I’m not a huge fan of brussel sprouts, but I was intrigued if they would work well on a pizza.
They did. Especially with the smoky pancetta. I like how they used more of the outer layers of the sprouts instead of putting whole or halved brussel sprouts on top.
The pecorino was good, too. The crust was the best pizza crust I think I’ve ever had. So light and bubbly.

Baked Macaroni and Cheese and cider from Friedman’s Lunch.
The Jacque Torres chocolate chip cookie was amazing. I have more appreciation for it since the last time I had one. They’re buttery and crisp… and the chocolate, oh my, the chocolate. The cookie is loaded with dark chocolate.
The other cookie I had was from Sarabeth’s Bakery. It was called a chocolate chubby. The outer shell was crispy, the inside was soft and gooey like a brownie, and loaded with pecans. I really liked it. I found the recipe online, so I know what I’m baking next!
So that’s basically it. When I wasn’t filming for the show, I was eating cookies and daydreaming about starting a bakery of my own. Maybe someday!
