Shirley Temple Sugar Cookies

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour (about 300 grams)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lime zest
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
1 large egg white

Pink Grenadine Buttercream
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons grenadine
2 cups confectioners' sugar

In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt.  In a large bowl, using a mixer on medium speed, beat together butter, sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract, lime zest and lemon zest until creamy; beat in egg white until combined.  Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in dry ingredients until just combined.  Chill dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.  Butter cookie sheets or use nonstick cooking spray.
Roll out cookie dough thinly on a lightly floured surface, to about a 1/4-inch thickness.  Cut into shapes and transfer to cookie sheets.  Bake 10-12 minutes or until light golden brown.  Cool 1 minute before transferring to wire racks to cool.

To make the buttercream, beat together butter, salt and grenadine in a large bowl, using a mixer on medium speed, until creamy.  Sift in the confectioners sugar.  Beat until creamy, about 2-3 minutes.  Spread or pipe frosting onto cookies.  Decorate with sprinkles, if desired.

Makes about 2 dozen cookies

  4. I love the idea of a grenadine buttercream! I haven't had a Shirley Temple in years. My roommates and I made them in college and spiked them with vodka, but that was probably the last time. I'd much prefer a Shirley Temple in cookie form anyway! :)

  5. They look sweet (well duh!). Sometimes nothing hits the spot like a good sugar cookie. I like the added flavors. I wonder how they would be with ginger added. The grenadine buttercream is a great idea. I haven't made sugar cookies in ages. I don't think I have heart cookie cutters either. I rarely ever make rolled cookies. I have a butterfly and maybe one or two others. I also have this cool ceramic mold that you press the dough into and it's shaped like a giant cat looking smug while holding a bird in its paw.

    Just going out to a favorite local casual restaurant tonight (360 - a place I reviewed on my blog). Fancy places are never good on V-day and I don't want to cook because cooking means cleaning up! I don't know if I'll get anything else out of the day. Sometimes Kevin will have flowers delivered to my office, but it's not a regular thing.

    No heart cookie cutter in my kitchen either! :/ Oh well!

  9. I don't have a heart either! I went to make heart cookies a few weeks ago and had to do a circle instead. Must fix this!

  10. I'm a cookie cutter hoarder and have way too many cookie cutters - at least a dozen heart ones too. I can't believe I have way more cookie cutters than I'll ever use. I also thought most be people owned a heart cutter and am surprised that this isn't the case - I got a heart first and then my addiction kicked in and I am now designing my own cutters and getting the clever people at cookie cutter companies to make them for me so that I can have special custom shapes that no body else has.
    These cookies are so pretty and I love how you piped little frosting swirls instead of just spreading the icing. So sweet!
    By the way, is this a stackable frosting recipe?

    1. Wow! That's amazing! I admire you for having custom designed cookie cutters! Do you have a personal favorite? My mom that one year when we went on vacation to Colorado. I can't remember what she got though.

      Aww thanks! I love piping. It's relaxing! It's borderline stackable. Like, almost, but I was afraid to because I didn't want to crush the piping. I think if you spread it on the cookies you could stack them.
