So let’s see.. today is my seventh straight day of working. Three more days until I get a little break. Days are starting to run together. Days full of pastillage, cupcakes, mochi cakes, brioche, muffins and sugar showpieces.
Today I woke up at 4:15 AM, and I wasn’t tired at all. It was the weirdest thing. Then it got weirder because I did crunches and watched Great Balls of Fire on HBO. Oh man – what a horrible movie that is. Was that popular in 1989? The acting is terrible. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot to watch at 4:15 AM.
Then I brewed myself the strongest cup of French roast I’ve ever had, got ready, and went to work.
Work flew by, then it was time for school, and more sugar sculpture work. My partner and I made this sort of metallic-dark purple color. I love it. I’m going to use all purples, silvers, black and white and my theme of the sculpture will be outer space… and maybe David Bowie. We’ll see.

Today we worked all day on making roses from pulled sugar. I don’t have the hang of it yet, and I won’t for a very long time. This type of work takes years of practice. Basically, you have to pull out petals from the hot sugar, using your thumbs.

My first rose.

I’ve got a case of the red hot thumbs tonight from all of the sugar pulling.

Ouch.
That rose is a thing of beauty. While I don't envy your red thumbs, I am jealous of the fact that you get to be surrounded by sugary goodness all day long. Sweet!
ReplyDeleteI think your rose is beautiful. I can't believe how much you have already learned so far. I am so enjoying reading about your studies and your jobs and your life in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteThat first picture is super creepy. It looks like some kind of body part dissection is going on. That rose, however, looks so good!
ReplyDeleteUmmm... I think your rose is GORGEOUS! It looks great. I'm so glad you are writing about school and taking these pictures. Seriously, I love reading this!
ReplyDeleteThat rose is gorgeous! Great job - and I hope your thumbs feel better today!
ReplyDeleteYour rose is beautiful! Take care of those thumbs.
ReplyDeleteI think your rose is beautiful! I don't know how you're working so many days in a row without going crazy. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI'm not an expert or anything, but I'd say you've got the hang of it, lol! Very nice girl!
ReplyDeleteOwie! But your rose is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBlogger isn't allowing me to reply to your individual comments! :( Thank you everyone for the encouragement! It means a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteEmily, hahah you're right! I was so tired I didn't even notice it.
You go girl!
ReplyDelete"Days full of pastillage..." sounds like a good title for a memoir!
